Apple Pie: From Old England to Iconic Americana

Apple pie, widely regarded as a symbol of American culture, actually has its roots in 14th-century England. The earliest known recipe comes from The Forme of Cury, an English cookbook from around 1390, compiled by the cooks of King Richard II. This early version included apples, figs, raisins, pears, and spices, all encased in a lard-based shell called a “coffin.” Unlike the sweet, flaky treat we know today, this dish didn’t include added sugar, and the crust served more as a container than something to be eaten.

The dessert eventually traveled to America with European settlers. Its first mention in the U.S. dates back to 1697 in a personal diary. By the late 1700s, updated recipes were featured in American Cookery, the country’s first cookbook. During the 19th century, apple pie gained widespread popularity as American farmers began growing numerous apple varieties. However, it wasn’t until the 20th century that apple pie became a cultural emblem. By 1902, it was celebrated in a New York Times editorial as a symbol of American prosperity. The phrase “as American as apple pie” began appearing in the 1920s and was solidified during World War II, when soldiers famously linked their service to “mom and apple pie.”

Did you know?

If you wanted to drink beer in Iceland between 1915 and 1989, you’d have to break the law to do so. The alcoholic beverage was banned in the small Nordic country for nearly 75 years, with the prohibition period beginning five years earlier than it did in the U.S.. The ban followed a 1908 referendum that received 60% of the vote, indicating most of the country was initially in favor of prohibition.
