25 Aug 2022// 2 SWIMMERS HOSPITALIZED; TOTAL OF 6 PULLED FROM THE WATER

Ladies and Gents,

Today PKS Fire/EMS and Police pulled 6 swimmers out of the ocean, this time on the east end of Town near the Windjammer. Two were hospitalized and all 6 were exhausted, one to the point where he could not stand without assistance from a Firefighter. Several had injected enough salt water that they were very sick. This was a serious event.

The victims were all swimming in a dangerous rip current, and 5 had no means of flotation. The person who did have flotation had a single styrofoam noodle.

The rescue Jetski pulled several of the victims to shore, and a PKS FD swimmer pulled in another. They reported that all of the victims had only their heads above water. One victim was going under the water to the extent that the rescue jet ski initially did not see him and passed him to get others. They were close to being lost. Of note in this event: the PKS Fire Captain reports that the sea was so calm and flat that a skiff could have been launched in the water.

We have 6-7 weeks left of swimming season remaining. Let’s get to the finish line without a tragedy by remembering three things.

· Do not go into the ocean without a means of flotation. It simply does not make sense in this environment unless you are an experienced ocean swimmer.
· Learn to recognize a rip current. The FD crew says that the rip was so clearly obvious that anyone who took even a cursory look before entering the water would have seen it.
· Do not mistake calm and flat seas as an indication that there is less risk of danger in the water. We are often asked why flags are yellow or red when the ocean is as flat as lake on a windless day. Today tells us why.

The Chief reports that all of this group were young adults in their mid-20’s who had come down from Raleigh for a day trip. If you live inland and you hear or know of people coming to the beach, tell them about this.

See the picture below, taken from the pier at the DoubleTree. The rip current is obvious.

12 Aug 2022// RECOGNIZING A RIP CURRENT STANDING ON THE BEACH

Ladies and Gents,

Following our communication on our near-tragedies on Monday several people asked about recognizing a rip from the beach, as opposed to the bird’s eye view that many of the images provide.

See the photo below, taken by our Fire/EMS crew. This is an rip current that formed on our beach strand on Tuesday. You can clearly see the distinguishing characteristics discussed in Monday’s communication: a relatively calm area with little or no breakers/wave action, with breakers to the right and left.

Our Public Safety folks regularly update the flag conditions on this page. Pls check this before you come to the beach. More importantly, irrespective of flag conditions, teach everyone in your party how to recognize a rip.

Unless they are a member of a college swim team, make it family SOP that they have some means of flotation with them before they go into the water. And if they swim for UNC, make them take two forms of flotation.

Be safe.
