Autumn is a bear’s busy season. They may feed up to 22 out of 24 hours to get the 20,000 daily calories needed to pack on fat for their upcoming hibernation. For a human to get 20,000 calories you’d need to eat around 90 candy bars!

This state of busy eating is called hyperphagia. To get so many calories, bears often search far and wide for the most calorie-rich foods. This means fall is a great time to view bears. But it also means it's especially important to keep any food attractants out of bears’ reach. Coolers, pet food, garbage cans, and birdseed, to name a few, are all things that could attract a bear. And when a bear becomes attracted to foods near human areas it rarely ends well for the bear. Keep bears safe this fall by watching them from a distance and keeping attractants out of their reach!

Old Fall River Road in Rocky Mountain National Park has reopened.

Weather and conditions can change quickly at high elevations. Before coming to the park and driving over Trail Ridge Road or up Old Fall River Road, take time to call the Trail Ridge Road status line first at 970-586-1222. Park staff will update the recorded line if the road status changes.

Based on weather and hazardous driving conditions, Trail Ridge Road and Old Fall River Road can temporarily close at any time. Colorado Vehicle Traction Law may become active at any time.

Hi all! My name is Diana and I’m an interpretation park ranger in Yosemite. I get to say hi to you all at visitor centers, teach you some cool things about our resources through programs, and answer questions while I see you on my hikes.

I didn’t always know I wanted to become a ranger, mainly because I was unaware it was even a career option. I was fortunate to land an internship through the Latino Heritage Internship Program, which really opened doors for me. Since then, I’ve worked at some incredible parks like Shenandoah, Yellowstone, and Zion. What drew me to Yosemite was their commitment to providing more information in Spanish.

This year is the first that Yosemite has offered a week of Spanish programming. Helping to create and shape this celebration of Latino Conservation Week has been super exciting! As a first-generation Mexican American, Spanish was my first language, and it still is for much of my family. The work I’m doing here to share more information in Spanish is deeply meaningful to me, as it allows me to reach more people who share my background. Working in a national park is a wonderful experience, and it’s even more rewarding when I can inspire others who look like me to visit or consider working in a park. Growing up, I didn’t see this kind of representation, so I carry with me the hope that I’m inspiring others as they visit the park.
