It’s officially 2025 🎉 I’ll start off this new year by telling you about my last two days of the last.

We spent our second full day in Auckland taking a day trip up Northland to the Bay of Islands! It was a bit of a drive from the city, but the scenic drive through Northland was completely worth it! Mountains, rolling hills, sheep, and trees 🌲 ❓ Did you know that California Pine trees grow better in New Zealand than they do in California? I certainly was not expecting so many, but the hills are covered with them! The Bay of Islands is a name given to the grouping of islands off the coast of one of the northernmost bays on New Zealand’s North Island. Once we stopped in the city of Paihia, we hopped on a ‘Hole in the Rock’ cruise which included an island stopover on Urupukapuka Island! After taking some time to sail through the scenic Bay of Islands, we did indeed sailed straight through the Hole in the Rock! Once on the island, we were gifted with a beautiful view from its highest point.

Our flight home was about 30 minutes before the New Year, so we spent our last day in Auckland sightseeing around the city. Auckland is termed the City of Sails ⛵️ We took the Hop On Hop Off bus in the morning to Mount Eden, taking in all the commentary along the way. ❓ Did you know that Mount Eden is just one of Auckland’s 53 dormant volcano’s 🌋? The city’s most iconic volcano, Rangitoto Island, sits in the harbor and last erupted 600 years ago. After climbing back down the crater rim, we hopped back on the bus to the Auckland Zoo! Among the fascinating animals that this zoo had was in fact a Kiwi! ❓ Did you know that the Kiwi lays an egg that is atleast 1/3 of its size?! These are such funny little birds. They are nocturnal so you can only catch them at night. From the Zoo we took the bus all the way back to the Sky Tower, taking in glances of the city streets and towns as we drove by. Once at Sky City, we went up to the experience called Weta Workshop Unleashed. ‼️ This workshop is responsible for all the character modeling and creativity behind both the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings movies! Their main studio is in Wellington but they also have one in Auckland. This was an absolutely amazing experience! Our last hour in the city was spent riding the elevator up the Auckland Sky Tower 220 feet above the skyline 🏙️ the views were breathtaking!! I did, in fact, feel the tower sway in the wind which was a trippy feeling after getting off a cruise ship 😵‍💫

“I’m going on an adventure!” Yes Bilbo, we did.

The day after arriving back in Auckland we took a day trip to Hobbiton and the Waitomo Glowworm Caverns 🧙‍♂️

My family are big Lord of the Rings fans! Between the movies and original books, I’ve grown up with them showing up throughout my life. New Zealand was always a bucket list trip for me, but the concept of seeing the breathtaking scenery as well as the Shire sealed the deal.

The Shire, or Hobbiton, is suited on a family owned farmed in Matamata, New Zealand. When searching for a location to house the Shire, they were looking for three specific details - rolling hills, a lake, and a tree on a hill. All three were found at the Alexander family farm 🐑 Peter Jackson and Company built the original Shire for the Fellowship of the Ring as a set in totality, but never meant for it to be a permanent fixture. The scene in the fellowship of the Ring, where Frodo is looking into the water after meeting Lady Galadriel and seeing the Shire burn is actual footage of the Green Dragon Tavern burning! When they came back to shoot the hobbit films, they rebuilt the set and made an agreement with the Alexander family to make it a permanent place to visit and have tourist rights.  in 2022, they brought the movie builders and artists back to Hobbiton to fully build the inside of two hobbit homes. We finish off our tour with a drink at the green dragon Tavern 🐉 

After leaving Hobbiton, we went to tour the Waitomo Glowworm Caves! Because the glow worms were very sensitive to light, they don’t allow any pictures to be taken. But it is very cool experience! We were taken down into cavern that had many limestone formations, and an echoing hall that I wanted to reenact the scene from the Grinch in. Then we were taken further down into the cave to a river that flows through to the opening of the mouth of the cave. We boarded a boat in pitch black darkness, and were pulled along by a series of ropes that were strung between the walls. We then got to see thousands of blue lights that looked like stars lighting up the Night Sky, which were really thousands of tiny little glowworms. It was a magnificent sight!

Hello Adventurers!

We departed our cruise yesterday and flew back to New Zealand for some more sightseeing! I now understand why flying international takes so long 🥴 ✈️

After Napier, we ported in Christchurch and took an excursion to a Canterbury Sheep Farm! Rolling hills, black swans, and sheep up the side of a mountain 🐑 the city of Christchurch was way more modern than I was expecting! A lot of buildings were damaged in the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes so it’s definitely a city in its rebuilding stage. We got to witness a sheep being sheared, which was an event in itself!

On Christmas Eve, we ported in Port Chalmers near the city of Dunedin! Lush green hills surround a picturesque town with lots of history! Dunedin in Gaelic means Edinburgh which is why the city is referred to as the Edinburgh of New Zealand! You can see the Scottish influence in a lot of the buildings. We took an excursion up to Natural Wonders where we saw the royal albatross colony, fur seals 🦭(including babies!!), and blue penguins 🐧. These animals are all native to New Zealand.

On Christmas Day, we sailed through the Dusky Sound, the Doubtful Sound, and Milford Sound. I can’t begin to describe sitting on my balcony drinking my morning coffee and looking at the beauty that is Fjordland. The most magnificent of all was Milford Sound which felt like you were sailing amongst giants ⛰️ the boat did a full 360 degree turn TWICE so everyone could get the amazing views!

Hello Adventurers! I have finally touched New Zealand soil 😆 our first stop took us to the art deco capital of Napier on the western coast of New Zealand’s North Island.

We spent yesterday sailing through the Cook Straight which separates the North and South islands! Being able to see the country on both sides of the ship was amazing 🤩

Fun fact: I am a lighthouse ju**ie and I got to see THREE 🙌🏻

The city of Napier is renowned for its art deco architectural style! You almost feel transported walking the streets. The surrounding countryside of Hastings is lined with rolling hills, grazing pastures, fig and apple orchards, and vineyards for the numerous wineries. Te Mata Peak rises from the ground above the beautiful TukiTuki Valley. According to Māori tradition, the peak has its origins in a tale of a giant warrior and a local tribe's attempt to outwit him.

The Hawke’s Bay region has been a wonderful adventure today!
