COMING SOON: COUNTY BRIDGES GOING TO EZPASS, TOLL BY TAG IN MAY

This is information from the County of Cape May regarding the conversion to EZ Pass on all county operated bridges starting in May, 2025:

The Cape May County Bridge Commission is transitioning to cashless all-electronic tolling beginning May 10, 2025. Tolls will be charged via an E-ZPass tag or Toll-by-Plate. Toll-by Plate allows all motorists to travel over the bridges and through the tolls without stopping to pay, even without an E-ZPass tag.

With an E-ZPass tag - Drivers with a valid E-ZPass tag in their vehicle have their tolls automatically deducted from their E-ZPass account and, as long as their account is in good standing, they do not receive Toll Bills. To avoid any problems, customers should make sure their license plate is on their account.

No E-ZPass tag - Drivers without a valid E-ZPass tag in their vehicle are mailed a bill for their tolls, usually within 30 days. A photo of the vehicle’s license plate is taken at the time of the transaction, and the plate number is used to obtain the vehicle’s registered owner information.

AVALON BEACH PATH UPDATE: FOUR NORTH END BEACH PATHS CLOSED FOR SAFETY

The Avalon Department of Public Works has closed four beach paths in the north end of Avalon due to safety concerns from recent erosion. Beach paths at 10th, 11th, 14th and 15th street beaches are closed until the sand back passing project occurs. As of now, the 12th and 13th street paths remain open, for now. During the winter, Avalon awarded a contract for a sand back passing project to occur in April and May at the conclusion of the winter storm season.

However, the County of Cape May requires emergency repairs to the small bridge just outside of Avalon, on Avalon Boulevard which prevents the heavy equipment being brought in town to move sand to repair the beaches. That project will begin after Memorial Day weekend when the bridge repairs are made. Avalon Boulevard is the only route into Avalon for these very large pieces of equipment. When work begins, it will be conducted overnight with the beaches free of construction daily at 8:00am to limit customer inconvenience. All beach paths will be restored and open to the public for the majority of summer. In 2026, Avalon anticipates a much larger hydraulic beach fill project.

To access beaches in that general area before the work concludes, the walking path behind the dunes is available to walk a block or two to the closest accessible beach path

AVALON SEMI-ANNUAL FIRE HYDRANT FLUSHING PROGRAM BEGINS APRIL 21ST.

Utility Services Affiliates will begin the semi-annual fire hydrant flushing program on April 21st. The program will occur weekdays between 7:30am-3:00pm. You may experience temporary low water pressure and slight discoloration in the water. Just allow your water to run for a few minutes, and the situation corrects itself. AVALON RECEIVES $84,000 STATE RECREATION GRANT FOR NEW FITNESS TRAIL

The Borough of Avalon was awarded an $84,000 grant from the New Jersey Local Recreation Improvement Grant program for the creation of the Borough’s first-ever fitness trail designed for seniors and individuals with physical limitations. The fitness trail will be located adjacent to Avalon’s recreational fields along Ocean Drive near 8th Street. The design of the trail was made by CME Engineering, and the application made by the Avalon Department of Administration.

“We are grateful for the positive response to the creation of this fitness trail which will provide a safe walking path and socialized, fitness opportunities for individuals who live in our community”, said Avalon Mayor John McCorristin. “State funding maintains our ability to provide individuals with enjoyable social activities in the Borough”.

The fitness trail will include the completion of safe walking path adjacent to the recreation fields. Avalon intends to install a few fitness stations for seniors and individuals with physical limitations to begin the trail. During future budget years, additional fitness stations will be installed. Benching will be added to the trail to compliment the social aspect of the fitness trail.

Avalon intends to pursue additional grant funding for a new playground at Grace O’Brien Park at the northerly limit of the fitness trail. The new playground will include handicapped-accessible equipment for the enjoyment of all children for an inclusive recreational experience.

The Borough secured a previous grant in this program that resulted in the conversion of tennis courts at the 8th Street Recreational complex to pickleball courts along with the construction of new tennis courts. Avalon is in the process of making safety and aesthetic improvements to the 39th Street Tennis facility. This month, Avalon completed the total refurbishment of bocce courts, also at the 39th Street complex.
