The historic cabin and bunkhouse at Avery, Idaho will be renovated to serve as employee housing, thanks to the - Legacy Restoration Fund.

The USDA Forest Service announced yesterday that it's investing over $26 million from the Great American Outdoors Act to enhance recreation opportunities for thousands of residents and visitors across Northern Idaho, Montana, and North Dakota.

“Across the Northern Region, we are working hand in hand with our partners and local communities to improve our infrastructure, recreation facilities, public lands access, and land and water conservation,” said Regional Forester Leanne Marten. “The projects address critical maintenance needs and improve access for all visitors.”

Forty-one projects in the Northern Region will receive funding to help address the backlog of needed maintenance to meet the public demand for access and recreation opportunities. These investments are made possible by the National Parks and Public Land Legacy Restoration Fund established by the Great American Outdoors Act.

One of those projects will be the renovation of the Historical Avery Cabin and Bunkhouse, located on the St. Joe Ranger District of the Idaho Panhandle National Forests. Construction of the historic portion of these buildings was started in 1909 and completed in 1936.

This project improves and upgrades the buildings to serve as housing units for permanent and seasonal staff. The quarters require renovations, repairs, and maintenance to make them livable again. Once finished, they will fill a critical need for employee housing in the Avery area.

Construction is expected to begin next year.
