Last night I finally tracked down a color photograph of EWEN ROSS, our home boat, in the working days as Portland, Oregon’s Harbor Patrol No. 1. — I’ve only ever found one other historic photo and that’s black and white.

Pretty wild.

We were recently gifted this incredible painting of our beloved ships. A while back a quiet, secretly insanely talented artist, , came sailing with us. When this painting showed up, based on a photo I had taken, we couldn’t believe it. It so perfectly captures these vessels that are so near and dear to our hearts. Our home and our business, rafted together. It’s perfect. Thank you for this burst of joy!

This is my grandfather’s carrot recipe. I haven’t made it in a few years and wasn’t thinking anything of it. When I took a little taste bite, my eyes welled up a bit. Just missing him so damn much. And then my next thought was to tell Grandma, but she’s been gone a couple years now. I hate missing these magical elders that were in my life, but I feel lucky to have been close, to have gleaned some of their ways, and to be reminded of them often.

Aria was the first great-grandchild in my family and when she tried to say Great-Grandpa she said, “Bumpa.” So he is forever Bumpa. And these are known as Bumpa Carrots.

I just love this girl. She’s brave and bold and loves hard work. I’ve said it before, but it’s just so dang fun to work with her. We took on a rig cleaning job and she did most the work. What a kid.

This kid got his first paycheck ever - and for reffing the game he loves with his entire being. Ocean pursues soccer with such complete obsession and poetry. I love to see it! He has now taken up reffing - sure as a soccer-related job - but also as a way to observe and learn the game more in depth. It’s inspiring to watch him.

To be honest, I haven’t posted much because the last week - but really the last three days - of this haulout were so intense. We were pushing so hard to get this driveline done and get our home back. Dylan at Centerline Marine is one of the greatest humans I’ve ever worked with. So hard-working, precise and creative. We had long days peaking with a 17hr day in there. We ran into some pretty sizable roadblocks along the way, but made graceful pivots and kept at it. We did get it done. The new driveline is so smooth!! Absolutely thrilled to have that done. 1.5 months and a few dollars later. 🫣

Yesterday was a welcomed break from the yard to work an all day charter to Blake Island. It was also a welcomed break from the back to back gales! What a perfect little day we had. Wonderful group celebrating a 43rd birthday. And one fella even braved the cool November waters!

Before / After. MAJOR MILESTONE ALERT! I finally got the wheelhouse back together and cleaned up. It was a journey from dismantling, masking, having it sprayed and shaped (the best insulation for steel boats!), modifying the backrest for easier bunk access, and re-assembled. HUGE thanks to Alex & Marie of for helping me get the putting back together stage jumpstarted (and for the wonderful hangs). And HUGE thanks to for helping wrap that up!!

PS. We also got the new shafts dry-fitted!! Things are happening!

Got the starboard rudder shaft packing housing apart! Port side tomorrow. This is so we can access the shafts without dismantling the steering quadrant and dropping the shafts out of the boat. We clean everything up best we can in place and repack it all. Down the line we’ll replace these steel shafts with stainless, but we are at the end of our budget (or past it maybe, who’s counting?), so we’re not letting perfection be the enemy of good enough. 🤣🤣🤗

Hit the ground runnin. Landed last night and this morning I was back in the yard in Port Townsend commencing work on the tug - thankfully with the help of Aria, who had the holiday off from school. We got headliner and wall coverings pulled out of the wheelhouse and pulled all the garbage insulation. We also got a good way in on the prep and masking for spray insulation.

Our man, Dylan, has been hard at work machining and tooling the new shafts, couplings and flanges for the new driveline. And Smalls and his team got the new bottom paint on.

It’s pretty wild that when all is said and done this will be the longest, most expensive and most in-depth haul-out I’ve ever done with a vessel, and you wont be able to see any difference. But if you’re within shouting range of me, I’ll tell you all about it. 🤣🤣

Ok, one last post to just say the biggest thank you to my gorgeous wife for planning the most amazing road trip around the entirety of Ireland! I drive, I carry stuff, I talk to people. But this lady spends weeks, often months, digging deep into researching places to see, things to do, where to stay, best place to eat and drink, etc. It’s an enormous amount of work and I simply would not and am not able to do it. She has a gift. Maybe an obsession, but we’re calling it a gift. 😘 And man, do I love her for it - a million other reasons. 20 years flew by. Im gonna try and pay a little closer attention to the next 20. Raising a pint for my Debsie! (Actually, probably not having a pint for a couple days, but figuratively 🤣🤣).

That wraps almost two weeks in Ireland with this magical woman! We fly home shortly and I cannot think of a better trip we’ve had. Ireland is our 49th country visited together and a combination of the absolutely stunning landscape, the wonderful people, the spirited music and the celebration of 20 years of marriage really came together to make something special. I will forever be grateful for this trip. And for this woman who takes me places. And for the pints…even in the airport.

Our Story

Ben first fell in love with sailing as a boy, visiting the Atlantic Coast of Florida, where his grandfather had 19ft daysailer. Years later, following a summer spent as crew on a competitive and successful racing yacht on Lake Michigan, the deal was sealed. He was hooked and has spent a good part of his adult life trying to find his way onto boats. As owner, caretaker and captain of the beautiful classic sailing yacht, TRUE, there is little he loves more than being on the water and sharing the experience with others.

Ben’s has nearly 5,000 miles offshore sailing experience including passages up the West Coast of the US from San Diego to Seattle, the North Sea from Sweden to Scotland, and the North Atlantic from Key West to Bermuda.

He is a United States Coast Guard Licensed Operator, has First Aid/CPR certification & Wilderness First Aid training.

He is also a husband, father of two, and professional musician with the indie-folk band, St. Paul de Vence.
