It's cool here when it's roasting in the Piedmont. Things to do without getting in your car: hike to the mountain top, climb on big-as-a-house rock formations, bicycle down the road. Fish for trout or visit the ducks in the pond, pick blueberries, listen to song birds & owls. Relax on the deck with a glass of wine & watch the sun set over the mountains. Look for deer and wild turkeys. 10-15 minute

s away: gallery hop, catch trout in downtown Bakersville , go rafting, buy gourmet goat cheeses at Oak Moon Creamery. 20-30 minutes away: drive the Blue Ridge Parkway, go gem mining, hike the Appalachian Trail, go fly fishing with Rivers Edge Outfitters, visit Penland Gallery & take a tour of Penland School of Craft, visit TRAC Gallery, & artist studios, go golfing. What you can’t do: easily connect to work and other people you need a vacation from.

Finishing up loading the kiln today! I love this part of the process, my brain loves the puzzle of fitting everything in. And the energy and anticipation is always at an all time high when I’m loading up months and hours and hours of creating and making pots with my hands!

My show is coming up on October 14-15 in Spruce Pine, NC- just a lovely fall drive an hour from Asheville! I’ll have these new pots there!

High Peaks Leads moderate and rewarding hike on Friday July 15

Join NC High Peaks for a pleasant hike to the Blue Ridge Pinnacle with an optional extra excursion to the Green K**b Fire Lookout on Friday, July 15.

The Pinnacle, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway near the turn to Mt. Mitchell, offers outstanding, 360-degree views. The hike up is a moderate loop of about 2 miles with an elevation gain of about 500 feet with some rocky tread.

If the group feels like doing more, we’ll drive a short distance on the Parkway to an overlook near the Green K**b Fire Lookout. This hike is less than a half-mile each way with a 300-foot elevation gain.

No van transportation will be provided. Strollers should meet at 9 a.m. at the Ridge Junction Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is near Mile Marker 355, just before the turn-off to Mt. Mitchell State Park. Parking is very limited at the base of the Pinnacle, so we will carpool from the Overlook.

Bring water, snacks, lunch and hiking poles if you use them. Leashed dogs are allowed. You might also bring a raincoat and even a light jacket depending on the weather forecast, which you should monitor before the outing.

For more information, contact Hike Leader John Whitehouse at 682-3217 or [email protected].

As always, check the High Peaks page or website, www.nchighpeaks.org, for last-minute changes due to weather.
