REOPENING UPDATE

Hey Hey Pig Fans:

This post is a little heavy on the heart! We made a commitment that we would not reopen until the building and business were Pig & Grits Ready, meaning it met the Pig & Grits standards.

Today, we hit a snag. This snag will now allow us to now open on THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7th at 7am. 🕖 (originally scheduled for 11/5).

Thank you for being patient and understanding. Our hearts are to see and serve you! This Pig 🐷 is demanding a little more 💄!

Power is back at Penland and doesn’t that look fine!

Power at Penland! After three long weeks, thanks to the dedicated efforts of teams from all over the country putting in long hours, power has been restored.

It’s not in every building— some were damaged and need more work, but for most of campus, electricity is back!

Thank you to the road workers, line workers, electricians, heavy equipment operators, tree removers, truck drivers, National Guard, railroad workers, volunteers, and all our neighbors who have been a part of the ongoing recovery from Hurricane Helene here in Western North Carolina.

Thank you to our friends, near and far, who have reached out in support.

There’s still a long way to go, but today we are feeling so very grateful.

The water has receded and clean up has begun. I hope we get more support soon. “Spruce Pine just got hit by Helene. The fallout on the tech industry could be huge”

Spruce Pine is a major global supplier of high-purity quartz. It’s an essential ingredient for microchips and solar panels.

A huge thank you to all the guests who have reached out to express their concern for our town, people, and our homes. There are no words! Thank you!

The hurricane damage has been significant to bridges and lower lying areas or places near water. Bakersville was hit pretty hard as were the outer lying areas. (I have heard that In Tandem Gallery is OK. I have not heard about Mica | Fine Contemporary Craft yet.) There are lots of trees to clear, roads that need a culvert, power to be restored, and mud to clean, but we are blessed.

The guests at our homes are OK. Conley House and Dougs Way weathered the storm and are OK. Lower Street In Spruce Pine was flooded but the water has receded and clean up has begun. Burnsville already has power in a lot of places and looks pretty good, all things considered. Some businesses have already opened to help the local residents with food and comfort. Our community is reeling and coming together… all at once. Neighbors helping neighbors. 🙂

Rick and I were in Illinois, which has been so bitter/sweet. We were safe, but so far away. We are doing what we can though. We are mobilizing help. Working with Airbnb corporate and their nonprofit as Airbnb Community Leader for western North Carolina. I have been aiding communication to the towns in NC, as well as with my hosting North Carolina hosting community With cell coverage and internet so limited up there, if you have any any at all, when you can login it can be so helpful to know what is going on. Not to mention, reassuring to concerned family and friends with no one to call. And, we are planning our supply run for when we head up there to help!

If you would like to help, please drop us a line. We’d love to hear from you. It reminds us why we host and everything we love about it! If you want to help the community please plan to visit in a month or two. Your business would be so appreciated right about then.
