It certainly was a throwback type of Thursday walking along the piers at downtownsailingcenter (DSC) reminiscing about my time as a teacher in Baltimore City and the positive impact we ALL can have on our kids.

For 30-years, Baltimore's DSC has opened up the world of sailing to EVERYONE, especially youth, folks with disabilities, and those with limited opportunity.

Kids in Baltimore deserve as many opportunities to succeed as we can possibly give them. Please consider supporting this hometown organization with a tax-deductible donation at sail4kids.org

“What the Key Bridge meant to sailors” - and

The bridge was built in 1977, about the time sailor Bobby LaPin was born, so his memories of it are lifelong.

“I remember going under the bridge in my grandpa’s little boat,” he said. “When you go under it, you hear the tractor trailers rumbling. It was exciting and scary, and you have sensory overload, with the sounds and the smell of the water. Then when I became a sailor, when I would go south on long cruises, the Key Bridge was the starting point.”

Years ago, he and his wife Alicia took their first cruise together as a new couple into the southern Chesapeake. As they passed under the Key Bridge, he turned to her and said, “The journey begins,” which he meant figuratively and literally. The memory still makes him teary-eyed.

Bobby LaPin and his wife run a sail charter business out of Port Covington marina.

“I’ve had this conversation with so many other sailors. The Key Bridge was the beginning of the adventure, and when you’re coming back home and you’re cold, and you’re hungry and often wet, when you see the bridge, and get closer to it, you know you’re close to home,” he said. “It’s the starting line and the finish line.”

Sinatra sang of New York, “If I can make it there, I can make it anywhere…” New York might be tough like that, but Baltimore has been nothing but helpful and loving to our little business - both on the boat and off.

I can’t begin to express our gratitude for everything you have done for us. From those who have sailed with us, to those who see us on social media, and to all the small businesses that have helped us learn how to be a small business…thank you so much.

Oh, and Happy Independence Day. 🇺🇸

Interrupting our regular programing for this public service announcement...

When I pulled over to block traffic and check to make sure everyone was right, I notice the teenage kid who owned the car did everything right to make sure he and his occupants were safe. Because he knew what to do, no one was hurt.

Baltimore's Love Boat? 🚢❤️

I have had the great, great pleasure of marrying so many couples on our sailboat. It's one of my favorite things to do. They're usually small elopement ceremonies at sunset with the city or Ft. McHenry in the background.

Teaming up with this year, l've been fortunate to step up to performing bigger weddings on Captain TJ's deadrise that can hold up to 25 passengers. More love to go around!

Réna and Dwayne's wedding was my second large wedding on a boat...the perfect couple, the perfect sunset, and the perfect memory. Congrats again Réna and Dwayne!

I'm excited for our next wedding!

I finally swam in the Baltimore Harbor! 🏊‍♀️🦀

Truth be told, it's not my first time swimming in the harbor. It's just the first time I intended to do it. Anyone with a boat will tell you, sometimes you might fall in when doing boat work on the dock.

It was a perfect day for an extraordinary event.
The big take away from this is... We are the caretakers of our rivers and oceans. If we want them to be clean (and make it a priority) it will happen sooner rather than later.

Thank you to Waterfront Partnership for the invitation to participate and all you and Healthy Harbor and Mr. Trash Wheel and everyone else do to make our harbor swimmable.

Looking forward to next year and more swimmers!
