A return to cruising is on the horizon, and like you, I can’t wait to !

As the cruise lines prepare to sail in 2021 and 2022, many changes are ahead for passengers who plan to take to the seas post-pandemic. New procedures and safety protocols are being implemented so travelers can safely sail together again.

Here are a few of the possible changes to expect on your next cruise:

An increase in technology used onboard: Passengers can expect more touch-free options for ordering food and processing payments, using the ship’s app for activity planning and reservations, and “attending” e-muster drills that eliminate the need to gather groups in small spaces.

Buffets: While buffets could continue to be featured at mealtimes, crew will be serving passengers to reduce the sharing of utensils. More grab-and-go options might also be available.

Private islands: With so many cruise lines owning private islands in the Caribbean, a stop in these ports will most likely become routine on their itineraries.

Destinations: Controlling the spread of COVID-19 over the next several years will be key around the world. Many destinations will require negative COVID-19 tests or proof of vaccination before disembarking.

Embarkation and disembarkation: Enforced times for each are to be expected, possibly with online methods for checking in and out to control crowds. Passengers might be required to test negative for COVID-19 before disembarking and returning home.

Further trends: Shorter itineraries, an increasing popularity of small ships, and more unique destinations will trend for both ocean and river cruises. The industry expects a boom in multigenerational vacations as families can safely reunite after a long period of social distancing, and “bucket list” itineraries will draw those who have missed cruising and want a particularly special vacation.
