The truth is that August had been a bad month for my family and me. But it got a whole lot better when this was announced yesterday. And to share it with others who are out there doing the work makes it even better.

Those who know me know how important mentoring and advising journalists has been in my life. I am humbled and honored to have been chosen to receive the Online News Association’s 2024 Community Award. Receiving this is great.

People were kind and helpful to me at the beginning of my career, so it’s always been important for me to pay it forward. It has been a true thrill to see my mentees continue to grow and thrive in an industry that hasn’t always made them feel welcome.
