Looking for a winter adventure close to home? The DeMeritt University Forest in Old Town offers a network of trails perfect for snowshoeing. Maintained by the University of Maine Forestry Office, these trails wind through a working research forest, providing a serene backdrop for your outdoor explorations. ❄️

While the trails in the northern section are not groomed during winter, they offer a more rugged experience for those seeking a true connection with nature. The forest is a haven for wildlife, so keep your eyes peeled for animal tracks in the snow.

Before you head out, here are a few tips:
Plan Ahead: Inform someone about your plans and expected return time.
Stay Warm: Dress in layers and bring the necessary gear to stay comfortable in cold conditions.
Trail Access: Primary access points are via gated woods roads directly off College Avenue Extension. Limited parking is available, so plan accordingly.

One of the unique things about Maine… no billboards!

On this date in 1978, Maine banned private billboards on its highways.

Arguing that Maine’s scenery is a precious resource that needs to be protected, and that the signs were hazardous to highway users, the 108th Legislature and Governor Jim Longley signed LD 1738 into law.

Based off a similar law in Vermont, the intent was to stop widespread advertisement, and to bring order to chaos. By replacing billboards with DOT-regulated signs and logos, drivers could enjoy the scenery, while businesses could promote themselves and guide interested drivers to those locations.

Lawsuits claiming constitutional rights were being violated eventually failed and the law continues to this day.

Wow!

In 1919, the Town of Smyrna bought a snow roller for $175 to pack down snowy roads instead of plowing them. Pulled by six horses, it was the height of snow-handling technology at the time!

Luckily, we’ve upgraded our winter equipment since then—though our snow roller at the museum stands ready just in case the MaineDOT gets desperate! 😁 Stop by next season to check it out and appreciate how far we’ve come!

Welcome to Bangor!

Bangor is the third-largest city in the state and the retail, cultural, and service center for central, eastern and northern Maine, as well as Atlantic Canada.

Bangor is 90 minutes from Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, Maine’s historic Mid-Coast town of Camden, and Baxter State Park, home to Mt. Katahdin, Maine’s highest peak. Many more small, quaint and historic towns, such as Greenville situated along Moosehead Lake, are just a day trip away and make Bangor the perfect starting point for the area’s recreational, cultural and relaxation opportunities.

The architecture you will see when visiting Bangor’s historic Downtown tells takes of Bangor’s gilded age. Our many brick buildings are a tribute to the tenacious spirit of the citizens following the Great Fire of 1911. Our historic districts will provide you a glimpse into the Queen City’s past. Music, theatre, outdoor adventure and more await you in Bangor!
