This is heartbreaking and one of our favorite dining spots in Valle Crucis. If you’re planning a trip to WNC, make plans to eat here while you still can. Helene’s wrath continues. Nearly all WNC businesses count on October revenue to remain profitable.

Dear Friends, 

It’s no secret that we’ve been struggling to survive as a business in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.  So many in our community are.  The debris piles and washed-out bridges we see everyday serve as constant reminders that we are far from “business as usual” in WNC, and losing October just isn’t something we can financially overcome, leaf money is what keeps the heat on and the staff paid through the Winter.  

It is with a heavy heart we announce we will be closing the doors of Over Yonder on Saturday, January 11th.  We had an amazing 10+ year run, and I am filled with gratitude for all the staff, guests, and vendors that were a part of this incredible journey.  Come see us while you can for another drink, another meal, another good time with good people.  Hopefully Yonders can come back one day in one form or another.  In the meantime hug your neighbors, tell your friends and family how much you love them, and hold close the things and moments you cherish.

Did someone say the "S" word? Snow flurries are officially in the forecast east of the North Carolina mountains! The timing will likely be late Monday afternoon through very early Tuesday morning. The best chances of seeing flakes fly will be in the Charlotte area and east of the I-77 corridor. Little to no accumulation is expected, but accumulating snow is likely in the higher elevations near the NC/TN border. This could end the longest snow drought ever recorded for some locations in western and central North Carolina.

An important message from David Jackson, President/CEO, Boone Area Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Town of Boone North Carolina and Explore Boone about the return to Boone and Watauga County:

In the two weeks since Hurricane Helene arrived in Boone and Watauga County, we’ve seen devastation fuel unity and adversity build strength throughout these hills.

This weekend we begin to welcome Appalachian State students back to Boone and our fall visitors are beginning to seek the beauty of autumn in the mountains once again.

Thanks to the tireless work of utility and construction crews, Boone and Blowing Rock have largely recovered from the storm’s impacts. Primary and most secondary roads have been repaired, though occasional lane closures and the need for alternate routes still exist in many areas.

As you make plans to return to the Boone area, we encourage you consider the following guidelines:

🚘 Tread lightly and stay away from the areas that are still deeply involved in recovery and restoration activities, particularly on the northern and western ends of Watauga County.

🏨 We praise our hotel and lodging community for being so immediately accommodating with the spaces they had available in the wake of the storm.

🛍 Many of our retail and restaurant partners are open for business, including those in downtown Boone as well as other popular areas across the community. Please note that a curfew remains in effect from 11PM to 7AM daily throughout Watauga County.

🚌 Consider ride share and public transit opportunities to lessen the impact on traffic.

➡ If you are not yet able to travel to the area, or maybe missed your planned trip over the last two weeks, we encourage you to continue to support our local businesses from afar.

💙 Be empathetic toward those you encounter in our community. Many of our residents are still dealing with major disruption as we are also trying to restart our economy and maintain our local workforce. The store or restaurant employee you come in contact with may very well be displaced from their home and trying to rebuild their life here. Please be respectful and pack plenty of grace and patience.

In many ways this is the same community you saw in mid-September, but in some ways, we are not at our best, and won’t be for some time. Know that you have been an important part of our recovery! The resilience of our community and the outpouring of support from off the mountain has gotten us to this point. Time will not allow us to thank you enough. We only ask that as you begin to return to our area, you follow the guidelines that we are suggesting, to ensure we can take careful and mindful steps forward in the days and weeks ahead.

Bearcat Cove Update: Post-Storm Recovery & Support for Local Communities
We’re incredibly thankful to report that Bearcat Cove came through the storm in good shape. Aside from some hillside erosion and a few downed trees, we were fortunate compared to others in the area. The roads leading to the property are passable, and we’re hopeful power will be restored by the end of the week.

Here’s something important to consider: while some parts of the region were affected by the storm, other areas of the High Country are still open for business. Many small businesses are relying on you and others to travel to the area after the initial emergency phase is over. Utilities will be restored in many areas over the next week or two, and places like Blowing Rock are already operational. These small businesses depend on tourism to survive, and your visit can make a big difference.

Once it’s safe, your visit can make a huge difference in supporting shops, restaurants, attractions, and local boutiques. Many of these businesses won’t make it through this tough time without tourists. Not to mention, the people who work behind the scenes, like cleaners and hospitality staff, also depend on these bookings for their income.

Your support means the world to us and the entire community. Let’s help these small businesses thrive again! 🌲 💙
