Who is watching who?!

Close approaches are rare but do happen! “Hashtag” was rolling and pec slapping close the boat on June 19th.

Bring a .sense certified company we are very careful in how we approach and watch whales. Being federally protected and/or endangered species, we need to be respectful of the whale’s space.

The faces of Frenchman Bay! Many of our boat cruises feature seals, including this harbor seal!

Islands in the Bay are home to haulouts for harbor and gray seals. 🦭

We recently spotted this young harbor seal on our Puffin and Lighthouse cruise!

Mount Desert Rock Lighthouse! AKA: MDR & The Rock

The most remote on the east coast of the US. This is a possible stop during our whale watch cruises. At times, the whales can be seen feeding miles or just yards from the shores of this tiny island.

MDR is also home to gray and harbor seals as well as nesting gulls. For several weeks in the summer, it is occupied by students at staff at and .

Mount Desert Rock will be a stop on our Downeast Seabird and Lighthouse Cruise and Mid-Coast 16 Lights Cruise. You can find out more information on our website. Link in bio!

Atlantic puffins continue to be seen in high numbers on our Puffin and Lighthouse cruises!

They will soon (if not already) be traveling back and forth to their borrows to feed their hungry chicks. When we see them in the water with fish in their beaks, it usually means they have chick waiting for a meal!

Come check out these incredible birds and other seabird species on our 9:30 AM Puffin and Lighthouse cruise!

Take a deep breath! It is almost Friday!

Baleen whales, such as this humpback whale, have two blowholes or nostrils. They open when they surface to take in more oxygen rich air into their large lungs.

During whale watch trips, we look for the blow or spout of whales along the horizon. This looks like a puff of smoke above the water. Humpback whales have a bushy-shaped blow. Sometimes we can smell their breath-which is quite pungent. Smells of dead 🐟 and we call it “snarge”. They also exhale forcefully, 3x the speed of the human sneeze. It almost sounds like an eruptive sneeze and you can hear the blow from hundreds of yards away on a calm day.

Before diving down, the blowholes seal shut. Humpbacks can stay down as long as 20+ minutes, but most times it’s about 5-7 minutes (on average).

Seeing whales emerge from the depths is amazing and very humbling.

Meet our 2024 research interns! Each season we co-sponsor an internship program with and to provide current college students and recent graduates experience working in the marine mammal field!

This year we have Chloe, Courtney, Eliza, and Jamie!

Research assistants collect data on each whale watch cruise. This allows us to continue learning about whales and the Gulf of Maine ecosystem.

Atlantic puffins known how to shake it off. A behavior that adds to the extra cuteness of these pelagic birds, it is known as rousing. It is necessary to help rearrange feathers and shake off extra water. It is often seen when puffins are preening.

These behaviors ensure that their feathers continue to function properly for insulation and flight.

This puffin was quite comfortable as the boat carefully maneuvered through the water.

The Atlantic Puffin

In breeding puffins, the beak becomes a bright reddish/orange. The colors become more vibrant in the spring as they begin to prep for the breeding season. At this time they consume more prey including hake, sand lance, and herring.

Pigments in their prey, called carotenoids, give the beak and feet a bright orange color. This is key to reproduction and is a visual advertisement of fitness and health- all key in showing their mate they are equipped to help successfully find food and raise a healthy chick!

Come see these amazing seabirds on our Puffin and Lighthouse Cruise! Departing daily at 9:30 AM!
