The monarch butterflies are back, flitting through the milkweed that are in full bloom close to the shore. The color contrast of the orange wings and mauve flowers is interesting. We have more than seventy plants this year and are hoping for lots of pods as well as coma, the fluffy white stuff. See them at bassharborcottages.com.

Crocus are the first flower of the season and always welcome. Their bright color is cheering and they bloom from early March through the end of April. The same varieties bloom at different times, depending on their location. They will be followed by daffodils, iris and daylilies. See where they live at bassharborcottages.com Happy Spring.

The milkweed pod has burst, sending fluffy coma out with each puff of air. Today was breezy and the coma rose and fell with each gust until it landed in its new home. We hope to see those plants next June. Visit the meadow where they live at bassharborcottages.com.

If you look closely, you’ll see a bright, white, tiny spot on the closest milkweed leaf. The milkweed flower, meadow and Boat House Cottage are in the background. We are hoping that it is a monarch butterfly egg and we will watch closely. Our plants continue to thrive despite being eaten to stem by the monarch caterpillars last year. There were no pods or fluffy coma seeds and we were concerned that the colony would not survive. The plants began to emerge mid-May and there is a rosy blush in that part of the meadow.

The last posting, three weeks ago, showed the first crocus of the season. The color has exploded dramatically and every day more appear. One of the best things about crocus is that they self-sow throughout the garden, popping up in clusters in the most unlikely places, in the middle of a walkway or on the other side of the edging. If I’m lucky, I’ll transplant them before the foliage fades and they become invisible. See where they live at bassharborcottages.com.
