This video is the initial fireup on the 1913 Excelsior 61ci twin model 7C after a complete engine rebuild. I had a couple of short " almost starts " before this while it was getting fuel into the engine and oil worked around. Carburetor settings were amazingly pretty close. The clutch on the left grip gets gradually engaged while pedaling to start turning the engine over. Then rotating the right throttle control drops the compression relief on the exhaust valves to build compression and fire up. I was so focused on making sure the motor sounds were correct that I forgot to disengage the clutch after startup. The rear wheel should freewheel to a gradual stop to take the machine off the stand and be ready to ride.

Following our intent to keep the machine appearing as an unrestored original vehicle, any external replaced parts were reworked to match the look of the original. Internal engine parts were upgraded to modern designs and materials to allow for regular running with extended longevity. These photos only show a small portion of the amount of work to bring this machine back to a dependable life. I have to say, this was a test of all my skills in mechanics and machining acquired over 40 years. It was necessary to even learn some new skills for this lost era machine. Easily comparable to the difficulty of building an all out race motor.

This is an interesting engine restoration I am doing for a client. A 1972 Yankee 500Z twin cylinder 500cc 2 stroke, one of 760 machines produced in Schenectady, New York. Designed to be the ultimate enduro motorcycle available, the engine is a serious piece of engineering with designs only available on factory race engines of the period. The motors were made by Ossa in Spain. Some of the features include; a 6 speed cassette type transmission with a dry clutch, two crankshaft assemblies coupled together in the center by the primary drive sprocket, two individual Motoplat ignitions, the coupler has multiple keyways to configure the crankshafts for either 180 degree or 360 degree firing. The cylinders and heads are remachined Ossa 250 Pioneer parts. After a devaluation of the dollar during that time, the bikes became too expensive to make and production was ceased after a two year run. But what a great platform for a vintage roadracer.

Hey Hot Rod guys. I am selling some of my equipment. This is a high end Bear engine analyzer model 40-9003 in very good working condition. Testing functions for all aspects of tuning, maintenance and troubleshooting. We only used it for the 4 gas exhaust analyzer. Data cards for hundreds of 70's and 80's domestic and import models. A great addition to a retro speed shop. Priced right.

Happy New Year, everyone! We hope you've all survived the holidays.

We're finishing up some things here in the shop and office. Although the doors are closed, we are still answering e-mails. It's been a bit busy for us, so we're a little behind with the messages and comments on here. If you'd like, you can shoot Bill an e-mail at [email protected]. He checks the e-mail daily.

Cheers!

Kelli

I just wanted to say that Bill and I (Kelli) have read all your sincere and heartwarming comments from the retirement letter post. When things start to slow down around here Bill plans to respond to each and every one of you. I know he is extremely humbled by your words. From my perspective, I think it makes this big transition just a tad bit easier knowing he has such support behind him and gratitude for his work over the years.

I thought over the next month I would share some throwback pictures of Bill and the business. You might recognize the people and the places, and you may even be in some of them. If you have a story or pictures of Bill / Bore Tech to share, please do!

Who remembers when the shop was red and then blue? Bonus points if you can give us the approximate year each picture was taken. (Hint: that's little Michael in the "blue" picture)
Also, you get an additional 50 points for every time you backed into that pole 🤣😁
