For , LASM’s incredible curatorial team is proud to highlight Louisiana artist Frank Hayden, a visionary sculptor whose work is part of our collection.

Frank Hayden (1934–1988) spent most of his life in Louisiana, shaping the region’s artistic and cultural landscape. He taught at Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge from 1961 until his passing, inspiring generations of artists. After studying at Xavier University of Louisiana, he trained under renowned sculptor Ivan Meštrović at the University of Notre Dame.

Deeply spiritual and committed to social justice, Hayden infused his sculptures with themes of fellowship, family, war, civil rights, and faith. His art often carried powerful biblical and humanistic messages, reflecting his dedication to both his Catholic faith and the fight against civil injustice.

Today, Hayden is recognized as one of the most influential African American sculptors of the 20th century, leaving behind a profound legacy that continues to inspire.
