The Louisiana Office of Tourism has created an Equestrian Tourism program.

“We recognize that people and their horses are a part of Louisiana competitive and pleasure sports,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser. The total value of all animal enterprises in the Louisiana economy is estimated at $3.28 billion. In addition to the value of horses produced and maintained in Louisiana, the activ

ities of the horse industry generate a tremendous cash flow for the state. Nungesser worked throughout 2016 with individuals and groups throughout the state to strategically develop a plan to increase Equestrian Tourism in Louisiana. The effort included a late summer roundtable discussion with 60 stakeholders from throughout the state.

“As a team, we unearthed the best practice solutions for properly investing and promoting the equestrian experience,” said Nungesser. “While there are many issues that need to be addressed, the primary purpose in this initial phase is to enhance current horse events and create new ones to bring visitors to our state.”

The initiative intends to build equestrian tourism to fill hotel rooms, campgrounds, RV parks, bed and breakfast lodging to benefit communities. The industry supports horse farms, show facilities, feed suppliers, hay growers, veterinarians, farriers, equine medicine suppliers, employees at farms and racetracks, truck and trailer dealers, repair shops, tire dealers, grocery stores, clothing stores, tack stores, gas and diesel stations, and more. Statistically Louisiana ranks as a top producing horse economy. A competitive advantage is that the cost of doing business, real estate and goods is not as expensive as other horse producing states. Louisiana has an abundance of open trails in state parks with the potential for more in the private sector. There are many athletes and horses that are or have been equestrian superstars. Fall, winter and spring are ideal seasons for events.

“We have a good story to tell and a good message,” said Nungesser. “We are already a good destination for all things related to horses and horse activities. Louisiana is a leader in the equine industry and we need to leverage it for our communities.”
