The invasive hammerhead worm has been showing up lately in some south Louisiana lawns.

It is a predator of earthworms and produces a neurotoxin to paralyze its prey. When handling hammerhead worms, former LSU AgCenter entomologist Nathan Lord says, "Wear gloves, avoid skin contact and certainly don't eat the worms."

Hammerhead worms can regenerate parts of its body, so do not chop the worm up. Lord says the easiest way to dispose of the worm is desiccation (drying out). He recommends, "Getting them in the bright sun for a while, or going back to our childhood and dousing with a healthy amount of salt would do the trick! But simply squishing them is not likely to do enough damage to kill them."

According to Lord, it's very unlikely, but it would take a very large population of hammerhead worms to consume enough earthworms to disrupt a garden or the natural soil turnover.

Although this species is thought to originate in southeast Asia, they have been introduced all around the world. They are likely to occur across Louisiana, but it may be more common to see them in southern Louisiana, as the climate (e.g., high temperature and humidity) is most similar to their native ranges.
