Alright, folks, mark your calendars for a real nail-biter happening next Monday night, July 10, at 6 o'clock in the train station. Why? Because our beloved city council will be voting on whether to hand over the end of Ann Street and the glorious waterfront attached to it to some fancy developer for his personal use. Can you believe it? Hold onto your hats, folks, because this one's a doozy!
Let me give you a little history lesson, in Beaufort, it's been a time-honored tradition that when our streets reach the water's edge, that shoreline and the precious right to build in the water belong to the good ol' town of Beaufort and its citizens. We've seen it in action with the fantastic dock they built down Gordon Street, and the delightful Topsail Park and dinghy dock over on Orange Street. Those were gifts to the people, my friends, open to anyone who wanted to enjoy a little waterfront shenanigans. Isn't that what life's all about?
But hold onto your cocktails, because things are about to get absurd. Instead of continuing this tradition of public generosity, some sneaky easement agreement with the folks who bought the Beaufort Inn and have plans to demolish it and replace it with a few "large houses."
Picture this, my fellow rebels: a glorious area by the water, accessible to all the poor souls out there who don't have waterfront property. Imagine being able to stroll along that shimmering shoreline, sit back, and take in the breathtaking views. Oh, the joy! And hey, for those who don't have their own boat, how about a temporary dockage where they can pick up their loved ones or buddies? Sounds like a slice of paradise, doesn't it?
But no! Instead of creating a public access for the citizens, our dear board of commissioners is beign pushed to sell to these developers. They're ready to sacrifice the beauty and accessibility of Ann Street and its waterfront, all for the sake of a few extra zeros in the bank account. Talk about priorities, am I right?
So, my friends, I implore you to rise up! Show up at that city council meeting and make your voices heard. Let them know that the people of Beaufort won't stand for this tomfoolery. It's time to fight for what's rightfully ours—the freedom to enjoy our own damn waterfront!
Let's put an end to this madness and preserve the traditions that make our town so darn special!
