Starting out as a hunting preserve in the 1800s as its name suggests, Hunting Island came to be our favorite beach and state park in the 1930s as a way to help put people back to work during the Great Depression. 🌊🌴⛱️

Although there's no shortage of sweet spots in our neck of the Southeastern coast, one of the most popular is undoubtedly Hunting Island State Park.

Brought to by the early Gullah, legend says that haint blue painted porch ceilings have been warding off evil spirits in the Lowcountry for centuries.

For over 300 years locals have been painting their porch ceilings haint blue out of tradition and superstition and you'll see it all over Beaufort today.

Purchased at Gay Fish Company on St. Helena Island, Paramount Pictures used over 3 tons of local shrimp for one scene in Forrest Gump.

The owners of Gay Fish Company on St. Helena Island recently found the 30 year old receipts for the local shrimp used in Forrest Gump.

Small, but strong and stout, Marsh Tackies are more than just horses. Brought to our sea islands by the Spanish in the 1500s, they developed a way of surviving and adapting to conditions that ultimately became their home. ❤🐴

Once a common sight in the Lowcountry, Marsh Tacky horses are a breeding strain from the Colonial Spanish line, and numbers have declined.

Another way to support all the awesomeness at Hunting Island is to purchase a special Hunting Island SC license plate. Friends of Hunting Island will receive a big chunk of the fee from SCDMV for the two year plate, and you know your money goes straight to the beach via the organization. The easily recognized plate with artwork by local artist Nancy Ricker Rhett shows you care about preserving and enhancing Hunting Island State Park for future generations. 💕
