U.S. Route 21 is a north-south highway that originally ran from Cleveland, Ohio, to Hunting Island here in . Over the years, parts of the route were replaced by Interstate highways. Today, 21 primarily runs through South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia, ending near the West Virginia border.
U.S. Route 21 has great historical significance as a major route for travelers and has played a role in various migration patterns, including the Great Migration of African Americans from the rural South to northern cities.
