Foal Update as of 10am on 8/7/2024:

Upon admission to the N.C. State College of Veterinary Medicine equine unit on Monday, veterinarians found that the days-old wild filly was suffering from dehydration, colic and associated pain, acute enteritis, and low immunoglobulin values which indicates the foal did not receive an adequate amount of colostrum and/or received low quality colostrum. Colostrum is critical to the development of a horse’s immune system. The filly is responding well to treatment, and we are making plans to transfer her to a horse rescue organization. She will not be returned to the island for several reasons including potential introduction of pathogens to the herd and her mother’s inability to adequately nurse her. Furthermore, it would be inhumane to return a horse to the island after it has been habituated to the care of humans and eventually, a habituated grown wild horse may pose a danger to visitors.
