The Inspiration Bellefonte mural was installed by Michael Pilato and Yuriy Karabash during the 41st annual Bellefonte Arts & Crafts Fair. This living mural will enable the community to contribute input to additional features. It is truly an inspiration. Leave it to a hunter to find these mysterious relics on the remote ridges overlooking Bald Eagle Valley. My new friend Logan is a traditional bow hunter and found what look like old boundary markers on PA SGL 92. The two markers are almost a half mile apart in the vicinity of the sharp turn on Greens Run Road. We were very intrigued and discussed multiple theories based on the history of the area, ruled out the possibility of them being graves, and struck out on some other ideas. But things came more into focus when we looked at the boundary line for Howard Township and bingo (thanks for the suggestion Van)!
The markers are almost exactly along the Howard Township line, although they are both a few paces above it. The original Howard Township was formed in 1810, when the township was much larger. So these markers were more likely placed when Curtin Township was formed (out of Howard Twp) in 1857 (along what is called the Marsh Creek Divide), about 168 years ago. I bet there are more out there if anyone is ever near township lines on state game lands, etc. Has anyone seen any others like this? Or have any better theories? Logan and I had fun hunting for this history!
