Many East Asians have a genetic variant in the ABCC11 gene that reduces body odor production. This gene affects the apocrine sweat glands, resulting in less secretion of the proteins that bacteria break down to create body odor. Consequently, many East Asians, including populations in Japan, Korea, and China, typically do not need deodorant and may not even sweat as much from their armpits

This genetic trait explains why deodorant is less commonly used in these regions compared to Western countries.
