Snow Goose Alaska

Snow Goose Alaska Small-ship Alaska cruises for folks with a sense of adventure and an appreciation for our planet. Cheers,
Dan Liden

The Snow Goose was the last boat designed by famed naval architect Ed Monk Sr. She has spent her life doing what she was designed to do: explore the waters of Alaska, British Columbia, and Washington. Since her christening in 1973, she has been a private yacht, a research vessel, an oil spill response vessel (Exxon-Valdez), a marine education school, and a small eco-tour ship. After my first trip

on the Snow Goose in 1996, I felt a deep connection with the boat and a huge appreciation for the established marine science program throughout local school districts. In 2006, I jumped on the opportunity to take over ownership of the Snow Goose and continue the marine program in Bellingham Bay and throughout the San Juan Islands. From May to September, the Snow Goose navigates the beautiful and remote waters of Southeast Alaska. Destinations include Glacier Bay, Sitka, Frederick Sound, Gustavus, and many stops in between. The Goose is for folks with curious minds, a sense of adventure, and an appreciation for our awesome planet. When the Snow Goose is off season from touring Alaska, it resides in the waters of Squalicum Harbor. As I continue my journey with the Snow Goose as captain, mechanic, and effective educator, I invite my friends and friends of friends to join me and my boat family on this beautiful vessel. We cherish education, experiential learning, and most importantly stewardship of our environment. If it interests you to climb on the Snow Goose locally, arrangements can be made for private parties, events, or tours of Bellingham Bay.

Hello, friends, far and wide!!
Many ask, “what is the Snow Goose up to during the winter months?”
Well… if you REALLY want to know…

The Snow Goose has been hauled out since December 5th and Captain Dan and his team have been working diligently to repair, maintain, and improve the Goose so that she is ready for more adventures this 2024 season.

The projects for exterior include:

- Repairing above the waterline, priming and painting
- Repairing the rub rails/prime and paint
- Sanding and painting of the hull
- Removing the Snow Goose lettering and replacing
- Stripping the railings, prep/paint
- Removing the propeller, rudders, and shaft. Replace as needed.
- Straightening the props due to strikes
- 4 new cutlass bearings
- Replacing the hull zincs
- Removing the black water lines, and replacing
- Removing the holding tank (replace soon)
- Removing intake stacks, clean up and paint behind. Reinstall.
- Replacing generator air intake
- Replacing thru hull plumbing
- Replacing stuffing box glands and hoses
- Repairing the starboard rudder assembly due to wear.
- Pass USCG inspection 🤞🤞

As you can see, the Winter months can be just as busy, if not busier than the season itself.

For those who have had the opportunity to be a passenger on the Snow Goose in Alaska, what was your favorite thing about your trip??
(Sights, food, adventures, ect)

For those that want to take a trip on the Snow Goose someday in the future, what are you most looking forward to?

Living on the edge.

Recent mountain goat sightings along the cliffs of the Kenai Fjords in Alaska. Awwww.

Curious about these guys? Here are a few mountain goat revelations for ya...

🐐 They're not goats, not really:
That's right, mountain goats are actually considered a part of the antelope family.

🐐 Skilled Cliff Climbers:
From sea level to elevations over 10,000 feet - mountain goats are expert climbers, navigating steep cliffs to avoid threats.

🐐 Vulnerable Kids:
Kids must learn to climb just two weeks after birth to survive.

🐐 Year-round Locals:
Resurrection Bay's mountain goats stay put throughout the year, guaranteeing you will see a few while onboard the Snow Goose. You might even spot a nanny giving birth along the coast.

🐐 Majestic Horns:
Both males and females proudly display impressive, curved horns adorned with growth rings, which serve as age markers.

🐐 Snowy Camouflage:
Their white fur helps them blend into snowy landscapes.

🐐 Herbivore Specialists:
Mountain goats feast on tough alpine vegetation thanks to unique digestive systems.

The colorful world beneath the iceberg's surface... 🌈

Did you know the coloration of icebergs depends on the ice's density and the air bubbles' presence? Yep! Blue icebergs, for example, tend to have compacted ice that absorbs colors in the visible light spectrum, giving them their unique blue hue. 🤯

This phenomenon can create stunning and picturesque scenes (which our photographers LOVE), especially when sunlight filters through the ice, highlighting the different colors and textures.

If you forgot a Father's Day gift, we've got a few spots left on our Sitka to Glacier Bay trip from June 29 to July 7. This would be the gift of all gifts, and you're basically exempt from future gift-giving. We're just kidding, or are we? Expect lots of glaciers, of course, and a high likelihood of whale sightings. But that's not all; you'll also have a chance for some exciting kayaking adventures if you're into that. Your Dad won't leave this trip without this expression 😄. (the trip and this expression)
