Bending on a new hot and steamy plank.

After the plank steams for a couple of hours to make plyable, we clamp it to the boat to put a bend and a twist into it. Once the plank cools, it has the right shape. Jeffrey then takes it down, makes some final adjustments to fit it in, then fastens the plank to the boat's frames.

Boatyard time! The most wonderful time.of the year.

We've been boatyard busy the last couple of weeks. We removed a few planks, and we were pleased that there were fewer to replace than we expected.

We also started preparing the new planks. And for those who are curious, the new planks are Port Orford Cedar. They smell delightful. Stay tuned for the story behind the wood. That's coming at a later date.

We also took advantage of a few days of dry weather to do some painting.

If all goes well, we should be steam-bending planks mid-to-late next week.

Getting ready for fun in the boatyard.

This year's big off-season project is to replace a few planks.

Whenever we take her out of the water to work on her, it feels like such an honor to be able to keep her in good health and to continue to share the history that she carries within her timbers.

With our 2024 season complete, I now have the time to look back at all of the highlights from this past season.

Back in May, we got to enjoy watching coastal brown bears at Pack Creek in courtship. Watching their interactions and subtle cues in their behavior always teaches me something new about these magnificent beings.

I stopped by a Western Red Cedar to show one of our guests the difference between it and a Western Hemlock on Cypress Island. As I was pointing out the differences, a glint caught my eye.
