The Salish Sea Bioregional Watershed is an ecological treasure of global significance. Her intricate networks of islands, estuaries, rivers and creeks are home to thousands of spectacular animal species, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth! SalishSea.org proposes a partnership of the people and governments of Coast Salish First Nations, British Columbia and Washington State to come toget
her in unprecedented unified action to cooperatively designate, design, implement and co-manage the Salish Sea Marine Sanctuary & Coastal Trail. The proposed Salish Sea Marine Sanctuary encompasses all of Puget Sound, the Strait of Juan De Fuca and the Strait of Georgia, plus the many thousands of tributary rivers and creeks flowing into them. Marine Sanctuaries are exceptional waterways where elevated standards of conduct protect and restore water quality, wildlife populations and habitats. Pollution levels are reduced, while eco-tourism revenues are multiplied. An excellent role model is California's system of 4 National Marine Sanctuaries which actively protect and restore over 50% of California's coastal shorelines, nearshore habitats and wildlife populations. The Salish Sea Coastal Trail will provide a world-class hiking and biking path circumnavigating the Salish Sea Marine Sanctuary. An abundance of educational exhibits, outdoor artworks and wildlife will make The Trail even more interesting and fun for All.
