Salish Sea Marine Sanctuary & Coastal Trail

Salish Sea Marine Sanctuary & Coastal Trail OUR VISION
Restore Natural Animal Populations throughout Our Bioregion to More than 50% of Historic Levels as Soon as Possible!

The Salish Sea Bioregional Watershed is an ecological treasure of global significance. Her intricate networks of islands, estuaries, rivers and creeks are home to thousands of spectacular animal species, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth! SalishSea.org proposes a partnership of the people and governments of Coast Salish First Nations, British Columbia and Washington State to come toget

her in unprecedented unified action to cooperatively designate, design, implement and co-manage the Salish Sea Marine Sanctuary & Coastal Trail. The proposed Salish Sea Marine Sanctuary encompasses all of Puget Sound, the Strait of Juan De Fuca and the Strait of Georgia, plus the many thousands of tributary rivers and creeks flowing into them. Marine Sanctuaries are exceptional waterways where elevated standards of conduct protect and restore water quality, wildlife populations and habitats. Pollution levels are reduced, while eco-tourism revenues are multiplied. An excellent role model is California's system of 4 National Marine Sanctuaries which actively protect and restore over 50% of California's coastal shorelines, nearshore habitats and wildlife populations. The Salish Sea Coastal Trail will provide a world-class hiking and biking path circumnavigating the Salish Sea Marine Sanctuary. An abundance of educational exhibits, outdoor artworks and wildlife will make The Trail even more interesting and fun for All.

TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT ONLY (3/3 & 3/4):
Great choir and concert in Bellingham at Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship re: Tokitae aka Lo**ta…the last Southern Resident Orca surviving in captivity - at Miami Seaquarium - the ownership of which formally agreed last month (with Lummi Nation and The Whale Sanctuary Project) to work together to retire and return Tokitae to the Salish Sea to live out her remaining years in a seaside sanctuary seapen - where she will once again be able to experience and enjoy at least some of the sights and sounds of Salish Sea - and which will be about 100x larger than the swimming pool she has been living and performing in for the past several decades.

Next Friday or Saturday to support Tokitae(Lo**ta) and hear great music.

Yesterday was a very special day! J-Pod popped up in the Canadian Gulf Islands in the morning, making only their second appearance in the month of May over the last five years.

Often when they head north into the Strait of Georgia, we won't see them back down by the San Juan Islands until at least the next day, but they made a very quick circuit of it, returning to Haro Strait by late afternoon. This gave the opportunity for a lot of very excited whale watchers to see them go south, then back north again at sunset on the west side of San Juan Island.

While they were very spread out heading south, they grouped up going north, making it an especially impressive sight to see all 25 whales together. I also got my first look at the newest member of J-Pod, J59, seen here surfacing next to mom J37 Hy'shqa off Lime Kiln last night. 🥰

Conservationists say the endangered southern resident killer whales will be further affected if the navy is allowed to fire torpedoes, deploy sonar and detonate bombs at sea.
