At Nosler, we make buIIets two different ways for two different desired outcomes: Impact Extrusion vs. Cup and Draw
Impact extrusion starts with a solid copper wire, cut into small slugs. During the process, a punch forces each slug into a die. The copper has no choice but to conform to the shape of the punch, which allows for manipulation in the jacket's thickness. This technique provides a buIIet with a tapered jacket and heavy base which allows for controlled expansion and a platform for large diameter mushrooms.
Cup and draw begins with a thin strip of copper from which a disc is punched out. This disc is then drawn through a series of dies to extend and shape it into a bullet jacket. Once formed, the lead core is inserted. A limitation of the cup and draw method is that the thickness of the jacket cannot exceed the original thickness of the copper strip used. We use this method to manufacture our match-grade buIIets as terminal performance is unpredictable due to the buIIet's ability to retain its weight and lack penetration.
