Trail Head Tuesday!

Have you ever wanted to enjoy some time outdoors while you’re visiting Elk Country!?
Every week we will be introducing a different trail in our area!

Featuring: The Austin Dam Trail ⚒️

An easy 1.5-mile Out-And-Back hike that features the ruins of the Austin Dam.
The hike explores the three different dams at the Austin Dam Memorial Park that were built to provide water for the Baylee’s Pulp & Paper Company during its operation from 1901 and 1944.

No need to travel to Elk County when you can join Ben Porkolab, Conservation Education Coordinator at the Elk Country Visitor Center for a virtual Learn at Lunchtime program on Friday, February 21, 2025, at 12:15 PM.

Learn about the reintroduction of elk in Pennsylvania by the Pennsylvania Game Commission beginning in 1913, the unique adaptations that help elk survive, the current state of today’s herd and the importance of mating season.

Presentations are followed by a question-and-answer session. Registration is required to attend the free, virtual program.

▪️Current full-time enrollment in a bachelor’s degree, associate/2-year tech program or advanced degree in an acceptable major (wildlife science, conservation education, forestry, natural resource management, environmental science, etc.)

Experiences/Skills Gained
▪️ Gain experience in the operations of a nonprofit conservation organization
▪️ Opportunities to provide educational wildlife and conservation programs at the Elk Country Visitor Center
▪️ Acquire skills needed to interact with visitors in a positive manner and provide them with a safe and informative experience in elk country
▪️ Gain hands on experience in habitat management while working with KECA’s habitat crew in improving elk habitat within PA’s elk range
▪️ Help plan and participate in fundraising events at the Elk Country Visitor Center
▪️ Learn valuable information about PA’s elk herd and other natural resources within our state

Trail Head Tuesday!

Have you ever wanted to enjoy some time outdoors while you’re visiting Elk Country!?
Every week we will be introducing a different trail in our area!

Featuring: Lowlands Trail in Sinnemahoning State Park 🍂

The trail follows the course of the First Fork through five miles of the park. The Scenic trail was originally part of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad bed.
From the northern trailhead, two miles of the trail are ADA accessible, including a wildlife platform. This area is ideal habitat for bald eagles, elk, and white-tailed deer.
