Southern Brazil. No-till system in Brazil is attributed to 3 men, developed over 40 years ago. We visited Franke Dijkstra’s farm, one of the pioneers, hosted by his grandson. They grow seed corn, milk cows and grow barley (second crop after soybeans; could plant after corn but N content is too low). The creamery is just a few miles down the road and a new barley malting facility is under construction nearby. Heineken beer has a brewery in the next town and Brazilians love their beer.

Checking the first 2024 soybeans harvested in southern Brazil. It’s summer here. After harvesting soybeans, they have a choice of planting wheat or barley as a second crop.

Spain has a rich agricultural tradition, fertile soils and, for the most part, access to water. Pork and beef are prevalent in the cuisine. Black hoof pigs roam wild in holm (stone) oak forests feasting on acorns. They make the finest Jamón ibérico (Iberian ham) protected by law.

Central Spain. Learning about specialty crops, chickpeas in particular. Segovia has an aqueduct built in the 2nd Century. It has never incurred damage; the stones have no masonry to connect them, they are just stacked; it still carries water over 7 miles from the mountains.

Central Spain. Fighting bulls must have the following characteristics: Bravery, must charge at the red cape and continue running through the cape, must want to kill - head is down.
They can start fighting when they are 2 years old. Bullfighting and flamenco dancing are uniquely Spanish.

La Mancha region of Spain. Famous for Don Quixote (Cervantes wrote in 1600s about this region) and Manchego cheese from Manchega sheep. The sheep are used for dairy and meat. Wool has no value. It’s milking time!

Large scale crop farming in Latvia, which is part of the Baltic region. Cereal crops and rapeseed make up almost 50% of Latvia’s agricultural production. The land has deep, rich black soil and gentle rolling hills.

Lithuania. Dairy farm with nearly 900 head, milked on two farms. The next generation studied agriculture and engineering and have their own ideas for sustaining and growing the farm. They grow hydroponic wheatgrass throughout the winter that gets ground in with their feed supplements. The young woman, who married into the family has an agronomy degree and is experimenting with cheese making.

Pag Island, Croatia. The island has about 20,000 sheep that graze on herbs. The barren island gets whipped by 100-125 mph winds (bura) that shoot down from the Alps, picking up speed and salt water, affecting the vegetation on the island. We visited the largest creamery that produces sheep, cow and goat cheeses. They have little mechanization due to lack of space. Pag Island cheese is known throughout the world.

Croatia is on the Adriatic Sea where trading and fishing have been a way of life for centuries. There are over 1,000 islands and many are inhabited. They farm sea bream (fish), mussels and oysters. Salt pans are plentiful and were a reason why this region was desired. Wine has been made since the Romans were here.

We are with a farm group in Bosnia-Herzegovina with visits to a nursery for tomatoes, cucumbers and cabbage and a 1,000 head dairy (milking 350 cows). Bosnia-Herzegovina was a region in the former Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia broke up with wars of independence. The region is extremely mountainous with a lot of rivers and fresh water from the mountains. They produce a lot of beef and pork and also have timber and vegetable production with export to neighboring countries.

We are in Southern Morocco learning about vegetable production and packing. Sweet corn and Brussels sprouts are grown in fields. Peppers, squash, green beans, radish and flat beans are grown in screened houses due to pests and to protect from too much sunlight.

Citrus farming in Morocco - they export to Europe, Asia and their largest markets are UK and eastern seaboard of USA. Their biggest obstacle is water. Wells are drilled at 400-500 feet and held in retention ponds. Solar panels produce power for the pumps. Drip irrigation system is used. Citrus takes about 5 years to grow for best yields and can produce 15-30 years.

Morocco - so many impressions - a modern country but still observing many traditions. The market alleyways and buildings date to the 12th Century. Most of the goods are made by crafts handed down through the generations.

Ireland - we enjoyed a visit to a sixth generation large scale farm producing potatoes, hay, cattle and sheep. Average Irish potato consumption is 187 # per year (down from 300 # in the 1990s) according to TEASAC.IE. Likewise, potato production has decreased. We visited with 3 generations. They have a large pot that was used during the potato famine 1845-1852 to cook soups provided to the community. Today the pot is used as a planter. The farmers discussed the importance of never forgetting the past and suffering if the forefathers. Many Irish succumbed to hunger and died and many emigrated to the US and other countries. The Irish are a major contributor to the US diaspora.

2020 Panama Farm Tour - Panama Canal
