Unbeatable

Tortilla de patatas, pan con tomate, and a café con leche, now that's a delicious and satisfying breakfast!

Tortilla de patatas, sometimes called tortilla española, is one of the most popular dishes in Spain. It's eaten at both breakfast and as a tapa, and it can be served room temperature or warm. Although it is the same word as the Mexican flatbread used for tacos, it is nothing like that. Torta means "cake" in Spanish; therefore, tortilla means "little cake." In this case of tortilla de patatas, this comes from the shape of this potato omelet, which is made by cooking in a skillet and then flipping it, at least once.

In Spain, some places serve tortilla de patatas with onions inside (concebollistas) while others do not (sincebollistas). It is definitely a bone of contention in Spain. How do you like your tortilla española?

So true!

The next time you are awakened very early by someone in your albergue getting up before dawn to start walking, you might take secret delight in knowing he might be clearing the path for the rest of you.
photo by Helen Van Wagenen, October 4, 2007, Camino Francés. This was actually a very pretty sight on this morning. The sun filtered through the trees to set the spider webs sparkling in this little forest. But others had already cleared the path ahead of us. Thanks, early risers!

It's grape harvest time on the Camino

Harvest (La Vendimia) for white wine grapes has started in Rioja and the red grape harvest is coming up soon!

The latest reports from Rioja indicate that the harvest is running about 10 days later than 2023's harvest, which is good news. Longer hang time for grapes on the vine usually means better, more complex wines! Growers anticipate a lower than average quantity of grapes but very good quality. If the weather holds, they will wait for the arrival of cooler nights in September, which helps give wines more balanced between alcohol and freshness.

As summer ends there's still time for the king of cold soups: gazpacho

While Labor Day weekend marked the unofficial end of summer, there are still warm days ahead, and we're still in tomato and cucumber season. That means there's still plenty of time for gazpacho!

Gazpacho may be Spain's most famous cold soup, but did you know there are many delicious cold soups served in southern Spain? Gazpacho’s close sibling is salmorejo, a thicker chilled soup garnished with jamón and egg. And one of our favorites is the elegant ajo blanco, a creamy white soup made with almonds and fresh garlic, typically garnished with sliced grapes.

The pilgrim's favorite

This is no ordinary sandwich. This is a Bocadillo!

What makes the Bocadillo special, like many Spanish dishes, is the high quality ingredients used to make it. You'll find fresh and delicious bocadillos everywhere from gas stations to high-speed trains to airport terminals in addition to places you'd expect them like cafés and restaurants. The most important ingredient is freshly baked crusty bread. From there, you can make a variety of bocadillos. Our favorite may be the simple but classic Bocadillo de Jamón.

This classic sandwich is a popular choice at breakfast in Spain. It is often served with a Café con Leche. The Jamón could be Serrano or Ibérico. The bread is typically drizzled with olive oil. Some optional additional ingredients include Manchego cheese, freshly sliced tomato, and garlic.

What's your favorite bocadillo? Tell us in the comments!

? On August 17, 1077 the agreement was signed by which the monks of Altealtares, in charge of the custody of the tomb of Santiago, cededed some land for the construction of the Compostela Cathedral. This document is the oldest source that narrates the discovery of the apostle's tomb.

El 21 de abril de 1211 se consagró la actual Catedral de Santiago. Aprovechamos esta efeméride para contaros algunas curiosidades de la basílica compostelana.

Yesterday, August 16th, was the Feast of Saint Roch.

But who was Saint Roch?

Tradition believes that he was the son of a governor of Montpellier in the 14th century. At the death of his father he gave up his worldly goods and set off to Rome as a mendicant pilgrim. Once in Italy he decided to stay and care for the victims of the plague that was ravaging Europe at the time. He eventually also caught the disease and was forced to live in the wilderness.
There, he was miraculously cared for by a dog that brought him bread and licked his plague wounds until they healed.

Catholic iconography typically represents him showing a plague wound on his leg and accompanied by a dog with a loaf of bread in its mouth.

Clearly a pilgrim saint who was able to survive the plague was destined to become a favourite amongst pilgrims and an intercessor for the thousands that would later die from the Black Death.

It is not unusual to run into Saint Roch at any of the churches along the Camino, in pilgrim attire, with his dog and presenting his wound. However, even if he is sporting scallop shells, he never went to Santiago!

More on the discovery of the Tomb of Teodomiro

This has made the front cover of our most important newspaper, so I'm guessing it will be all over the Camino news soon.

https://elpais.com/ciencia/2024-08-13/el-adn-identifica-a-teodomiro-fundador-del-camino-de-santiago-hace-12-siglos.html

It's official, according to the Postdoctoral Researcher Dr. Patxi Pérez-Ramallo, the tomb of Bishop Teodomiro has been found.

in case you are wondering, according to tradition, Bishop Teodomiro of Iria Flavia was the first person to 'certify' that the long lost tomb of the Apostle Saint James the Greater had been found. Or in other words, he can be credited with having started the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. As for Dr. Pérez-Ramallo, he is an expert in osteological and isotopic methods for studying past.

In case you do not read Spanish, here are the main conclusions:

1. The bones belong to a male.
2. Carbon-14 dating indicates that he died after the age of 45.
3. Physical features suggest that he had a weak build and did not perform physical labor during his life, which is consistent with the figure of a bishop.
4. The dating of a rib suggests that he died around 820 AD, with a margin of error of up to 15 years (the tomb was discovered in 813 AD)
5. The carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen atoms accumulated in the bones allow us to infer what this person ate and where their food came from. The results reveal that they had a very austere diet, almost monastic, but not as limited as that of the peasants of the time, which is consistent with a bishop who lived like a monk.
6. The isotopes indicate that he lived near Santiago, although his origin was further southwest, where Iria Flavia is located.
7. His tomb was found right under the nave of the Cathedral.

The above data allows us ''to say that it is Teodomiro with 98% probability'', according to Dr. Pérez-Ramallo.

A Survival Guide thinks this is all awesome!
