When we first began sharing online, our goal was to capture and share the beauty of our little sanctuary along the coast. It was our way of offering those who haven’t experienced it in person a chance to feel the magic of this place through the web.

Recently, we’ve leaned into videos as they’ve proven to gain more traction and attention in this ever-evolving online world. However, as we step into this new year, we hope to return to our roots—sharing stills that embrace the interplay of light and shadow in a way videos simply cannot.

With the shift of the seasons and the clocks falling back, we’re gifted a little reminder to slow down and savor each moment. At Deetjen’s, the light softens as it filters through the trees, casting a new glow on familiar spaces. Inside our restaurant and each of our rooms, this gentle transformation brings out the beauty in even the smallest details—textures warmed by golden hues, shadows dancing in quiet corners. Let this season be a time to pause, notice what surrounds you, and find joy in the simplicity of each day. Here’s to appreciating the little things and the people who make each day meaningful.

And I look at myself in the mirror, the many faces connected to handwriting. And I see myself young.
This is the me. Here. Today.
Where are all the other faces today?
Are they still in love?
Are they still grieving?
I am in love.
I am young.
Where will I be when it is someone else’s today in the mirror?
Who will I be when I return here?

~ I drank a little too much wine w/dinner tonight… I hope I can fall asleep! This is my 3rd time in Big Sur in the 20 years I’ve lived in California and it’s reasuring to know that it remains the same here at Deetjens’. We only have a couple days here then down to Cambria then back to Santa Clarita. These tress will always be here, that makes me feel like I can come back anytime and feel welcomed.” ~

A note on Deetjen’s by the one & only Henry Miller “For a metaphysical treat stop at the Big Sur Inn, which is also a haven for stray cats and dogs. Life along the South Coast is just a bed of roses, with a few thorns and nettles interspersed.”
