A hot-air balloon was forced to make an emergency landing Sunday afternoon at a city middle school, but no one was reported injured and the scene was quickly and efficiently cleared.

The landing happened late Sunday afternoon at Carter G. Woodson Middle School on Winston Churchill Drive. The reason for the landing was not immediately made known, but the balloon’s pilot was able to safely touch down on a grassy area beside the school, and emergency personnel quickly jumped in to assist in stabilizing the craft.

A Hopewell Police officer on scene estimated that from the time the balloon landed until it was safely stowed in a trailer and removed took about 15-20 minutes.

Hot air balloons gracefully gliding over Sonom Valley’s picturesque vineyards in the early morning hours is a common local delight. Landing in residential or commercial zones, while less common, has occurred at least three times since Jan. 24, bringing rainbow-colored balloons safely to the ground.

Jeff Spear, a pilot with Sonoma Ballooning, said these landings are typical when operating a hot air balloon this time of year.

Rainbow-colored hot air balloons have been spotted landing in residential and commercial neighborhoods lately, but it’s nothing new - and safer than it seems.

The 2022 Lancaster Hot Air Balloon festival lifts off Sept. 16 in nearby Bird-in-Hand Pa.

By the time it lands on Sept. 18, attendees will have gazed at the sight of dozens of onsite technicolor balloons, perhaps ridden in one themselves, enjoyed a steady rotation of multi-genre musicians, enjoyed local dishes, engaged with their kids, and perhaps taken a deeper dive into the unique Amish culture.

The Sept. 16–18 Lancaster Hot Air Balloon Festival is a three-day celebration that blends flight with performances, family time, and food.

You can get high in the sky at the 11th annual Lancaster Balloon Festival & Country Fair on Friday, Sept. 16 through Sunday, Sept. 18 in Leacock Township, Lancaster County.

The one-of-a-kind event features 40+ technicolored hot air balloons, as well as fall activities, live music and entertainment, food, vendors and a fireworks show.

If you like community fairs or small-town celebrations, it's a good weekend for you. The Denver and Solanco Fairs are already in full swing, and the Amos Herr Community Festival and Lancaster Airport Community Days will happen this weekend.

The L'Italia Festival, a festival dedicated to Italian culture and food, will debut this weekend.

As the 11th annual Lancaster Balloon Festival and Country Fair kicks off, running from Friday, September 16, to Sunday, September 18, the sky over Bird-in-Hand will again become a rainbow of canvas and the picturesque fields below will be full of fun for the whole family. The festival is held at 2727 Old Philadelphia Pike, just across the road from the Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant & Smorgasbord. The hot air balloons will be launched for rides as long as weather permits, but even for the people who intend to keep their feet on the earth, there will be plenty of entertainment on the festival grounds.

“We have balloon pilots coming from as far as Florida for the event here,” Jake Frame, the owner of Lancaster Balloon Rides, told The Lancaster Patriot. His grandfather started the company in the ’80s, and Lancaster Balloon Rides started the festival in 2010. “Up until 2019, we really only had probably 15 to 20 balloons out. Then after that, it’s just word of mouth. They all started talking about it in 2021, that everyone loved the festival, including the pilots. And I had pilots reaching out to me left and right to come and fly with us.”
