This is “Blue Babe”, he is an estimated 36,000 year old naturally preserved Male Steppe Bison mummified by the permafrost. He was accidentally discovered by gold miners in Alaska in 1979.

Blue Babe is the only known Pleistocene Bison on display in the world. He was so well preserved that researchers cooked, and ate a part of his neck muscle. They described the taste as tough, and earthy, yet delicious.

We had the privilege of visiting this unique, one of a kind specimen at the University of Alaska Museum of the North.

Models of two former giant birds that once roamed New Zealand 🇳🇿. The one pictured left is a Moa, there were 9 species of Moa in New Zealand. Only the females grew to the size of 10’ feet.

The one pictured right is the New Zealand Giant Penguin, this giant penguin weighed in at 220 pounds! Its Latin name “Pachydyptes Ponderosus” literally means Heavy Diver.

While both are now extinct, their remains, and models of them can be seen at the Auckland Museum.

Touring the Pensacola Light, on the Navy Air Station in Santa Rosa Island. This lighthouse built in 1858 is still functioning, with a height of 190 feet, and a visible light range of 31 miles. It’s currently listed on U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

This outrigger dugout canoe of Tikopia origin was found drifting in the Tasman Sea in the 1970’s by a Tuna Vessel. It was found with its rowing paddles in place, but no fisherman insight. Still to this day the mystery of the unmanned canoe has never been solved.

Tikopia is an island in the independent island nation of Solomon Islands 🇸🇧. You can see this canoe at the Auckland Maritime Museum.

While in New Zealand 🇳🇿, one of the things we done was a Māori Cultural Experience. The Māori are the indigenous people of New Zealand. Their native language is Polynesian. During this encounter, they performed a native welcoming ceremony for us known as a Haka, to officially welcome us to “Aotearoa”. Which is native for the North Island of New Zealand.

This native welcoming ceremony was very well, one of the most intense, and emotion filled experiences I’ve ever encountered during our travels. You can feel the intensity of their ceremony in the air around you, as it seems to reverberate throughout your entire body down to a cellular level. Changing your heart rate, and heightening your senses of awareness…Most definitely an experience, I’ll never forget.

We visited the Tāmaki Paenga Hira as it’s known in the local Māori language. We were officially welcomed to New Zealand by indigenous Māori tribes people, with a native welcoming ceremony during a cultural experience program (quite intense), and taught an oral history of their peoples.
