We conducted a controlled burn today of our land along Sawmill Creek Trout stream with the assistance of the Blanchardville Fire Department.
The area is an oak tree covered hillside along the south bank of Sawmill Creek trout stream. The area used to be a pasture for cattle many years ago but has become overgrown and choked with weeds and brush.
We are working to remove brush and invasives like honey suckle and buckthorn and restore it to a prairie to reduce errosion.
Just one step in the process. Watch for further updates as work continues.
Many people have asked me what varieties of wild flowers and grasses that were planted on the pollinator prairies at the Lodge so I have produced a short video. It's not a video masterpiece by any means but it does show you the varieties that were planted. The prairies are not in full bloom yet but I've already seen several species blooming. It should be spectacular in a year or so. Enjoy!
Great night at the Lodge! The sunset was spectacular over our little Hidden Bluff.
Snow shoeing along one of the many trails at Hidden Bluff Lodge. What a georgious day! Blue skies, crisp air and views of the driftless area in winter. We saw two bald eagles roosting on our property in a tree along Sawmill Creek Trout stream. Perfect day!
Tranquility and peace after a fresh Christmas Eve snow along one of the private trails at Hidden Bluff Lodge. Merry Christmas everyone!
This is one of the fields that has now been planted with prairie flowers. This is what it looked like before the planting.
There are some major conservation projects underway at the Lodge property right now. One is the planting of 6.5 acers of pollinator prairie and the clearing of brush from the oak savanna areas along the ridges. I will be posting a series of photos of the project so you can watch the transformation.
Just some of the many prairie flowers currently in bloom at Hidden Buff Lodge.
We have big plans for the Hidden Bluff Lodge property! It is pretty now but it will be stunning when it's done!
I will be posting those plans in the coming weeks in their entirety but I wanted to keep you posted on what we are doing right now. We have completed the planning and permitting stages for the overall conservation plan and now we are ready to start the hard work to implement those plans.
Over the next couple weeks we will be planting 500 trees! There are 200 red oak to augment the existing trees in the oak savanna areas and 300 white pines that will be planted along the borders of the property to improve wildlife habitat and provide cover for birds and small animals.
Keep checking in for photos of the completed work and please share the page with your friends and family and encourage them to check out our website at www.hiddenbluff.com.
Big day at Hidden Bluff Lodge. Blanchardville Fire Department conducted a prescribed burn of the pollinator prairie. There is a lot to do this year to prepare the ground for Prairie seeding in the fall. Check back for updates.
