Here’s what you need to keep with you in your carry-on:

⚓️ 1-2 days worth of prescription medication
⚓️ Glasses or contacts (if needed)
⚓️ Alcohol (21+ only. see your cruise line’s policies for limits & restrictions)
⚓️ A change of clothes in case your bags aren’t there before dinner
⚓️ Swimsuit & sunscreen so you can hit the pool deck
⚓️ External phone charger
⚓️ unopened pre-packaged snacks for the kiddos (or yourself, no judgment)
Basically your carry-on should be able to get you through the day, in case your bags take a while to find their way to your room!

What’s the biggest mistake you could make on a cruise? Not getting there! If your flight is delayed, the ship will not wait for you. A good rule of thumb is to fly into the area at least the day prior to your cruise. This gives you a buffer for flight delays.And when it’s time to go home, don’t schedule a flight before noon (maybe 11am if the cruise port is very close to the airport). It takes time to get off the ship. The ship needs to be cleared by the port, you have to disembark and clear customs/immigration, and you have to actually get to the airport, which could be an hour or more away.
