Hurricane Idalia Weather Advisory

The Daufuskie Island Ferry Crew is monitoring Hurricane Idalia and making final preparations. Ferry service on Wednesday, August 30th will be suspended following the 11:30 AM departure. Therefore, we are canceling the 1 PM and 4 PM departing Buckingham and 2:30 PM and 5:30 PM departing Melrose Landing for Wednesday, August 30th. This gives our crew enough time Wednesday afternoon to properly secure the ferry boat prior to the arrival of tropical storm-force winds.

We hope to resume service on Thursday, August 31st, and will confirm that with you as soon as possible following the storm and our assessment of the docks and boats.

Please keep in mind that the captain can suspend operations anytime it is unsafe to travel. This includes short delays for passing weather conditions. Ferry operators have strict safety guidelines for operating in adverse weather conditions and unscheduled delays and cancellations may occur without notice.

A note on parking:
The parking lots at both Melrose Landing on Daufuskie and Buckingham Landing in Bluffton are in very low-lying areas and can be prone to flooding. We recommend not parking in these locations until the storm has passed. Patrons at Melrose Landing are encouraged to move their vehicles as far away from the dock as possible within the parking area. Patrons at Buckingham Landing are advised to move vehicles to the Daufuskie Island Visitors Center parking lot, located at Tanger 2 Hilton Head Outlets, 1414 Fording Island Road, Suite A190.

Posting as a courtesy for Daufuskie Island Independent School

Be part of something historic! The opportunity to help change the trajectory of education of an island comes only once a generation! Become a founding supporter of Daufuskie’s FIRST middle school and help strengthen young minds. WE NEED YOU!

With no secondary school on Daufuskie, middle schoolers have an hour and a half commute each way to public school. In a movement to reengage our youth in their community and create access to exceptional educational opportunities for all of our island students, our community is working together to open Daufuskie Island Independent School this fall of 2023.

Golf Haig Point’s Rees Jones course in our Inaugural Golf Tournament, September 11, 2023 in support of the youth of Daufuskie! Bring friends and enjoy a day helping make Daufuskie history! We are so excited to show you the special work we have going on here. Visit our website (www.diis-sc.org) to register and learn more about our project.

We look forward to commemorating September 11th with you!

Leanne Coulter and Rhonda Davis run Daufuskie Blues studio out of a 1930s schoolhouse on remote Daufuskie Island, South Carolina, accessible only by ferry from Hilton Head. 'I was shocked to learn indigo was here in our backyard, growing wild,' Davis says. 'It’s leftover from the days of indigo plantations.'"

Indigo was once so vital to the state people called it “blue gold.” As interest in the dye reignites, historic sites are shining a light on its past.
