National Inspire Your Heart with Art Day

Did you know? The Kuhlmann-King Historic House was rented by an artist named Harry Anthony DeYoung in the 1900s. He created beautiful art pieces inspired by the Hill Country during his stay. When he was in his fifties, DeYoung suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed on his right side, leaving him unable to paint with his right hand. He refused to give up his art and taught himself how to paint with his left hand. If that is not a picture of inspiration, what could be?

We are very lucky to say that the Historic Complex up on Historic Hill is home to a few of his paintings and sketches, as well as a very interesting booklet honoring his sketches of Hill Country Outhouses. Next time you stop by ask about DeYoung and his artwork, and maybe you'll get some artistic inspiration. 🎨

Way Back Wednesday - Except it is not so far back!

Remember when the Khulmann-King Historical Complex built the archway leading up to the historic house, pioneer kitchen, and Graham building? Now it's a beautiful way of starting the walk up Historic Hill.

🌊 WAYBACK WEDNESDAY 🌊

Check out this throwback to the Boerne Swimming Pool in the 1960s! Located above Cibolo Creek at the west end of Main Plaza, this spot was a great summer hangout. 🏊‍♀️

During the early days of Berges Fest, the pool even hosted synchronized swimming demonstrations! 🎶✨

While the pool was eventually filled in, there’s talk of turning the area into a water feature and splash pad—though no details on if or when this will happen.

Do you have memories of this iconic spot? Share your stories with us! 📸👇

The older photo comes from the archives at the Patrick Heath Public Library.

Kuhlmann-King Historical Complex 2022 and the Boerne Elementary School Field Trips.

It is always a great time seeing how fascinated and inspired the kids are as they look around the buildings.

The Kuhlmann-King House was built in the year 1886 by William Kuhlmann, a German immigrant who wanted to impress his love, Marie, and convince her to move to the Texas Hill Country. This plan worked and they moved into their home in the late 1880s, but, unfortunately, she passed away during childbirth in 1896.

This sketch shows the Kuhlmann-King House and pioneer kitchen located behind what is now the old city hall building. The artist, Bettie Edmonds, one of our esteemed board member alumna, drew many sketches of Kendall County.

Find out more by visiting our museum next weekend, on Saturday the 25th from noon to 3pm.

Way Back Wednesday -- The Holiday Series 3/4
Dreaming of Christmas

In this photograph taken for the 1986 Boerne Photo Contest, two children, Jill Tarpey Wallace and Andrew Keifer, are pictured on the floor of the Kuhlmann-King House off Blanco Rd. I know we are all Dreaming of Christmas this week and we are so close!

The Kuhlmann-King is now a special museum and historic site showcasing the everyday history of pioneer German immigrants in Texas. It is open every second and fourth Saturday of the month so go enjoy some Christmas holiday cheer and Boerne history next weekend. Tune in next Wednesday, a.k.a. Christmas Day for the last of the Way Back Wednesday Holiday series for this year.

Want to preserve your family photos, join us at the Memory Lab located on the 2nd floor of the Boerne Public Library. We have all sorts of digitization equipment available.
