- Mariner's Legacy
Mariner's Legacy was built by Capt. Isaac Ward in 1867. It has been in the family every since, but now the family wants to share it with you, see VRBO!.
(9)
This is a secluded 22 acre family owned estate with over 1100 ft of shoreline looking 1 1/2 miles up and 2 miles down the East River. The spectacular views will take your breath away as the river laps literally feet away from you. East River has been called 'Little Annapolis' by the 'Chesapeake Bay Magazine'. The uncongested waters provide for a cruising heaven for you to watch kayaks to yachts t
ravel pass. If you want to experience what it is like to live on the water, you must come to Mariner's Legacy. There is nothing comparable to it in Mathews County on the rental market for maritime history, 22 acres of open space and privacy as well as wide, miles long river views and proximity to the Mobjack Bay and Chesapeake Bay.

MATHEWS FARMERS MARKET
More than a market, it’s an experience!
The Mathews Farmers Market, sponsored by the Mathews Main Street Committee, will open for the 2023 season on Saturday, April 1st from 9 am to 1 pm.
Located on Court Street on the Historic Courthouse Green in Mathews County, Virginia, the market is open from 9 am to 1 pm each Saturday from April through October (except Saturday, during Mathews Market Days).
Food, flowers, and gifts galore! Our vendors feature a variety of fresh vegetables, along with homemade bread and bakery goods, eggs, and meat. In addition, our vendors offer plants, flowers (potted and bouquets), handmade crafts, clothing, and jewelry. You are also likely to find handmade ceramics, soaps, yarns, and various types of artwork.
Bring the entire family (including pets) for all to enjoy the pleasant social atmosphere. We also encourage everyone to check out the surrounding shops and restaurants in downtown Mathews, all within easy walking distance of the market.

A great idea for a “girls weekend”
The quaint community of Ware Neck is the site of the Gloucester-Mathews County tour which features three private homes – an Antebellum mansion, a home in the style of a Lighthouse, and a more contemporary home. Also included is Belle Terre, a beautiful, expansive historic garden, as well as Ware Episcopal Church c. 1652, one of the oldest surviving parish churches in the Commonwealth, which serves as the tour headquarters, and Singleton United Methodist Church c. 1875. This is a shuttle-only tour.

See you next March at your nest!
Danger: Sad content coming 😔 The end of summer means the end of osprey visits to the Chesapeake Bay 😭
Often called the "osprey garden," the Chesapeake Bay has the most concentrated population of osprey in the world. Every spring (about mid-March), these quintessential Chesapeake birds travel thousands of miles to return to the same nests, where they reunite with their mate, breed, and fish for menhaden and other species. As this year's osprey fledglings become independent, adults begin to migrate to their wintering grounds in Central and South America. The juveniles will usually begin migrating during the last weeks of August.
BYE OSPREY, WE'LL MISS YOU!

Oh yeah!! But usually I see people out with their fishing rods instead of crab “dip nets”.
Happy First Day of Summer! There's nothing quite like this magic season on the Bay...

We definitely are seeing them more frequently, especially in the Mobjack Bay! Often we see the babies with their mothers also. 😍
Dolphins that visit the Chesapeake Bay in the summer have been listened to, photographed, identified by their dorsal fins and documented in a crowd-sourced app for going on five years.

Blue herons are daily vistors to our shoreline. And if you’re lucky, you might get to see the youngsters!

We see bald eagles all the time at Mariner’s Legacy. Especially since we have a pair of nesting Ospreys and bald eagles are lazy hunters and will steal from the ospreys in a heart beat!
The bald eagle has a pretty amazing comeback story. This iconic bird went from only 487 nesting pairs in 1963 to nearly 10,000 nesting pairs in 2007, when it was officially removed from the federal list of endangered species.
Still, there are many other creatures in the Chesapeake Bay watershed that need our help, including the Atlantic sturgeon, American eels, and freshwater mussels. Cleaning up our waterways and providing healthy habitats for these native species are crucial ways that we can protect their populations for generations to come.

“I think they see that there's a tangible result to work. And they get a real sense of a connection between the land and what's happening in the water."
So true, my friend, so true.
In his 40 years at CBF’s Clagett Farm, Michael Heller has transformed the way we think about food, farms, and the connection between our lands and waters.

Wow
Even in winter, the Bay is very much alive. Juvenile humpback whales hang out in Virginia's nearshore waters from November to early March—though whales once made it as far north as Annapolis! https://bit.ly/3sEtaYM

If you haven’t been to Mathews, then you definitely need to find out just how cool (and beautiful) it is!
There's nowhere quite like this coastal, colorful small town. Here's more on what makes Mathews such a unique town in Virginia.

Put in at Town Point Landing or Williams Wharf in Mathews to enjoy the scenery on the East River, a showcase for a number of Maritime Heritage Sites, including an old mill. If you’re an advanced paddler, consider kayaking up and back to the entrance of Mobjack Bay. You can also start your journey at Put-in Creek (what’s in a name?), adjacent to the historic Mathews Courthouse with shops and dining. If you choose this route, it is preferable at high tide.
Don's miss these 10 spots to kayak, canoe or stand up paddle board on the Middle Peninsula in rural coastal Virginia.
