We have exciting news! The new “Rebuilding Together” sign has been installed at Station 4 in Matlacha. The original sign lasted quite a while, but needed to be replaced.
Thank you to everyone that took the time and provided us with feedback a while back with the survey. We are still rebuilding and we are all in this together as a community!

Lessons, so many lessons.

Dear Calusa, thank you for this massive shell and earth mound (aka “midden”) that our Inn and Restaurant sit atop. 🙏

This elevation - one of the highest points in the county - has protected Cabbage Key from many a storm. And while folklore may suggest otherwise, archaeological studies have proven that this particular mound was not used as a sacred burial ground.

The Calusa were indigenous people, who inhabited our area for several thousand years until the mid-seventeenth century, and are considered to be the first "shell collectors." These avid fishermen and fierce warriors used the shells for tools, utensils, weapons, jewelry, and ornaments for their shrines.

The shells were discarded into huge heaps like the one seen in this photo which was taken a couple of days ago.
