Why 1900 Park Fare at Disney’s Grand Floridian Is Perfect for Kids with Autism Who Are Nervous Around Characters

If your child is hesitant around characters—especially the ones in full costumes—1900 Park Fare might be the perfect intro to Disney magic.

My sons have always been scared of characters with their faces covered, but here they met Mirabel, Aladdin, Tiana, and Cinderella—all face characters who could talk and smile. It reminded them of Halloween, something they’re familiar with, and made the experience far less intimidating.

The best moment? Mirabel noticed my oldest son on his tablet and actually stopped to talk to him about his game. She was gentle, kind, and connected with him in a way that brought me to tears. It was the most meaningful character interaction we’ve ever had.

The calm atmosphere, predictable flow, and space to observe without pressure made it a low-stress, sensory-friendly experience. The buffet also had plenty of familiar, kid-approved food options.

We loved it so much that we’re planning to visit multiple times on our next trip. It truly made Disney magic feel accessible and joyful for our family.

Universal Orlando is Always Busy—But Don’t Let That Stop You

Universal Orlando is always buzzing with excitement—especially with big things happening in 2025! With new attractions like Minion Land and the highly anticipated Epic Universe opening on May 22nd, crowds are expected to be even bigger. But don’t let that stop you—especially if you’re traveling with a child with autism.

Just today, I was helping a family get a quote for Universal Orlando, and I was reminded how well they’ve prioritized accessibility. Even the newer rides are built with thoughtful accommodations, making the experience easier and more enjoyable for families with sensory sensitivities or other needs.

One of the most helpful tools is the Attractions Assistance Pass (AAP). This pass is designed for guests who have difficulty waiting in traditional lines. Instead of standing in a crowded queue, you’ll receive a return time and can wait elsewhere—so much less stressful. Universal Orlando also offers quiet areas, Rider Switch, and team members trained to support both visible and invisible disabilities.

And if you’re out on the West Coast, Universal Hollywood has a similar program called the Guest Assistance Pass (GAP) that provides many of the same accommodations.
