Stagecoaches on the National Road weren’t just for passengers. Pete Burdine, one of the best and fastest drivers on the road was employed by the Good Intent Stage Company to transport oysters from Baltimore to Cincinnati in record time. It was reported in the November 28, 1835 edition of the Washington Reporter that, "Oysters are now carried from Baltimore to Cincinnati in five days, by the line recently established on the National Road for that purpose. This we believe is traveling more rapidly, or full as fast, as the United States Mail."

Changes in technology and public road use caused sharp declines and revivals of the National Road over the past two centuries. Visit the National Road Museum in Boonsboro, MD this Saturday from 10 to 3 to learn more about some of these changes, and be a part of a new era of revival by traveling the byway and visiting the stops along the National Road Interpretive Trail! https://nationalrdfoundation.org/the-national-road/travel-the-road-overview/

Original post is by our friends on the Pennsylvania portion of the road. Be sure to follow their page as well.

An unknown author wrote, "We hear no more the clanging hoof and the stagecoach rattling by, for the steam king rules the traveled world, and the Old Pike is left to die." By the late 1870's travel along the National Road was reduced to local traffice and the occassional explorer. Trains ruled travel as they were faster and more comfortable than travel along the road.

Please note that our curbside dropoff space and street parking are limited and the lot beside the museum is not available. Sidewalks between the Shafer Park lot and our museums have been cleared and guests are encouraged to use that lot.
