Thank you to our sweet friend for capturing a few shots as we came into the dock after charter.

And thank you to for letting us operate out of one the most gorgeous marinas in the Puget Sound ✨

We have some gorgeous weather coming our way mid week, as well as a little wind… and some openings in our schedule, just saying ;)

We shared a very special Golden Hour with a lot of talented people the other night, complete with orcas and the most gorgeous sunset. We have a lot of fun content coming your way from it, specifically from videographer from and photographer .twilley.

In the meantime here is a shot from a quiet moment aloft. Thank you to everyone who came together to make a special day, and thank you to this weird old boat for always delivering the magic.

Can y’all help us wish a VERY Happy Birthday to this sailing goddess? If you came sailing with us before, Mena was the one who made you feel like family. She handles the boat with ease while also making sure that everyone is comfortable. She makes us belly laugh and makes us feel safe. She sails as if she was born to. She is the best. Happy Birthday, Mena!

We are a family full of teachers, for many generations back. We know how hard you work and we know how sacred your summer time is. What better way to kick it off than spending an evening sailing into the sunset in a bean bag chair with a rum punch in your hand? Bring your fellow teachers, or your friends, or your family and we got the rest!

That’s right folks- we are HIRING! This could be an amazing opportunity for someone who’s a confident sailor and excited to step up into a captains role. We work hard, we sail hard, and we have a great time. We prioritize community and inclusion and safety and fun. Prior sailing experience is required for both positions. We will be taking our time with the hiring process. We are excited to tell you more!

Please share with your sailor friends and do not hesitate to dm us with questions or inquire via email: [email protected].

The boat maintenance projects are never ending and it will be like this forever. To look after an (old) boat properly one must enjoy this aspect (almost) as much as the summer sailing.

We made a little YouTube channel, which somehow feels embarrassing. Because who can be bothered watching us bop around in our weird boats?? Alas, if you feel like bothering we have a link to our first video in our bio. I have no promises that these videos will be on brand (I have a feeling they won’t) or be of remote interest to anyone except me when I rewatch them in a decade or two. All I can say is that I have been enjoying the process of documenting and editing so far and look forward to continuing, especially with exciting plans unfurling for spring and beyond.

Pterodactyl was built by my father. He started in Snohomish in 1974 and launched her in 1981. He had never sailed in his life but always loved boats from afar and was a talented builder.
When I was born we moved to Olympia from Seattle and my parents purchased a small piece of land in the cove of Big Fishtrap where we kept ‘dactyl often. Only catch was that the cove would turn to mud flats at low tide, so twice a day she laid on her side in the mud. Once my parents got established they got a mooring in deep water at the mouth of Big Fishtrap. My first phrase as a baby was “Tide out?” because it determined whether we would row or walk to check on the boat and go play on the beach, which we did everyday rain or shine.

I am proud to own this boat and continue the legacy of my family, no matter how eccentric and colorful. I’ve worked on sailing yachts around the world for over 10 years, but I still feel like my biggest accomplishment is sharing this boat with my hometown. I am also so thrilled to have my brother and his partner as the permanent crew.
Thank you all for joining us over the years and sharing our love of this weird boat and gorgeous place.

Helllooooo everyone. We have been a little quiet over here. Our books are closed and this weekend we wrap up our last sails of the season. We are starting to lay into our other jobs- Ocean and Mena are back to dive harvesting geoduck and Cosima is back running a yacht in Europe. We have had such an amazing season and we can’t say thank you enough to this community. We are tired from a long and busy season but very, very happy.

Now we enter the quiet months of boat maintenance, scheming, and dreaming for next season. We have some big ideas brewing, but more on that later. For now we will focus on putting the boat to bed- meaning all the sails and running rigging will be taken off and stowed, all the cushions go to our shop, and we start digging into as many projects as the weather allows. This years project list is shorter than last year. Apart from all the annual maintenance we have to: address some rot in the galley cabin top and recaulk all the siding, put bronze welps on the masts, install the new chimney for the wood stove, replace the Bob stays, finish replacing the toe rail, and it goes on.

In the mean time here is a photo from one of our favorite sails this season :)

We will miss you all!

We have very few charters left before we wrap up our best sailing season yet! But summer is not technically over yet and we plan to soak up every drop.

It’s amazing how many people have spent their whole lives near the Puget Sound but have never been ON the Puget Sound. Never been sailing, never seen Mt Rainier from the water, never seen Hope or Squaxin island, never come to know our population of migratory seabirds, never seen a quiet morning where everything is still, never been swimming (it’s not that cold, honestly), never seen the golden light of sunset reflecting off the water.

We can remedy this. We have an array of sailing packages that each offer a different experience. Have friends or family visiting from out of state? Let us help you show off this amazing place you chose to live. Want to have a family night that eveyone will remember? Girls night? Date night? Birthday party? Take a look at our website or send us a message :)
