10 Fascinating Facts about Snowy Owls you Need to Know! ❄🦉 Did you know that some of the most magical birds can be spotted in Massachusetts during the winter?

#1 Snowy Owls are native to the arctic tundra, and travel south during the winter in search of food.
#2 Unlike most owls, they are active during the day, perfect for daytime birding.
#3 They like wide open spaces like the tundra, so while in Massachusetts they can be spotted in open fields, along the shore, or at Logan Airport!
#4 Mature males have almost pure white coloring, while females have some darker feathers, like Hedwig from Harry Potter!
#5 They can fly up to 50 MPH.
#6 They are the heaviest, and second-largest, species of owl in North America.
#7 Their diet consists mostly of lemmings - a small rodent - and swallow their prey whole!
#8 Snowy Owls make their nests on the ground.
#9 They have insulating feathers - essential for keeping their body warm while in the tundra.
#10 Their feet, unlike most birds, are covered with feathers; this also helps to keep them warm as their body heat is not escaping through their feet. Think of it as their own pair of cozy slippers!
