Boston has a wealth of maritime history—both past and present. Bostonians welcome crews and cadets from all over the world to their harbor on a continual basis as part of the Visiting Ship Program and are gearing up to greet the return of the Tall Ship fleet for Sail Boston 2026! From July 11 - 16, 2026, this spectacular event offers crews, cadets and visitors from all over the world an unforgetta

ble experience and a world-class maritime celebration. Come and see why Tall Ships America named Boston its 2009 and 2017 Port of the Year. Known as America’s Walking City, Boston is home to many historic sites that date back to the American Revolution. Visitors to Boston are encouraged to stroll the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile red brick walking trail that passes sixteen nationally significant historic sites. The Freedom Trail begins at Boston Common and ends at Bunker Hill, near the Charlestown Navy Yard and the home of the USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned ship afloat in the world. Sail Boston® will entertain its younger audience with educational programs focusing on US and international maritime history. Cadets and crewmembers will be available to educate children of all ages of their personal experiences at sea, home countries and more.

We're always interested to hear about what Denis Sullivan and its crew are up to! After a quick overnight sail from Charleston, the ship is now docked at the Thunderbolt Marine shipyard just outside Savannah, Georgia — the perfect spot for a bit of springtime maintenance. ☀️ 🌊

Keeping a traditional wooden sailing vessel in top shape takes time, care, and the right conditions. The crew is using this window of time to focus on essential upkeep, ensuring the Sullivan is safe, strong, and ready for the voyages ahead. It’s all part of the long-term work needed to preserve these beautiful ships for future generations.

Learn more from World Ocean School about the ongoing work to keep this beautiful wooden schooner shipshape as we sail toward Sail Boston 2026!⛵️

It's "knot" Friday yet, and since we’re all just trying to stay afloat until the weekend, we thought we'd share a new sailing not to keep your spirits buoyed ⚓

Today's knot is the "Buntline Hitch." This knot is used to tie buntlines (or ropes) to the bottom edge of square sails so they can be used to hoist or furl the sail properly.

It's another "knot" Friday, and we're back with another sailing knot for you to learn about ⚓

Today we have the "Double Overhand Stopper" knot, which is used to create a reliable, moderately large, stopper knot. It can also be used to increase the security of another knot.

The Picton Castle isn’t resting as 2026 approaches. Before the ship makes its journey to Boston next year, some of the crew will be taking advantage of the upcoming summer months by hosting their next session of the Bosun School—an innovative hands-on marine skills training program in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada. From June 9th to September 7th, 2025, this immersive experience takes students through the art of seamanship, leadership, and provides them with the technical skills needed for life on the high seas.

Tangible skills:
⚓ Rigging, sail repair, caulking, and anchor handling
⚓ Small boat handling in beautiful Lunenburg Harbour
⚓ Safety, teamwork, and leadership skills that are beneficial on any ship

If you've ever wondered about life at sea, applications for the program are now being accepted. Scholarships are available for qualified applicants. Learn more and apply here: picton-castle.com/bosun-school.

This autumn, the 300 ton Picton Castle will set sail for the South Pacific Ocean.

Departing Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, on or before November 1, the Barque PICTON CASTLE casts off from her berth on the working waterfront, and catches the ocean’s winds to the South Pacific. She sets sail with her crew and trainees on an eight month voyage across the Caribbean Sea, through the Panama Canal, and for the enchanting Galapagos islands. She continues her ocean passage for the remote home of the BOUNTY Mutineers at Pitcairn Island, on to beckoning Tahiti and legendary islands of French Polynesia, Marquesas, Tuamotus, Societies and the Austral Islands. She’ll then return to the Caribbean by way of mysterious Rapa Nui (Easter Island), and join the grand convocation of the fleet of Tall Ships from many countries, gathering on the East Coast of North America on the 250th Anniversary of the United States by mid-June 2026. In case you couldn't tell its "knot" Friday... it's actually Thursday. But don't worry, we've got a new sailing knot for you to learn about. We hope this will brighten your day and get you through the rest of the week. 🌊 ⚓

Today we have the Alpine Butterfly Loop. This knot is useful anytime a secure loop is required in the middle of a rope. Also, if a length of rope is damaged, it is a wonderful way to isolate the damaged section so that the rope may still be used.
