Boston has a wealth of maritime history—both past and present. Bostonians welcome crews and cadets from all over the world to their harbor on a continual basis as part of the Visiting Ship Program and are gearing up to greet the return of the Tall Ship fleet for Sail Boston 2026! From July 11 - 16, 2026, this spectacular event offers crews, cadets and visitors from all over the world an unforgetta

ble experience and a world-class maritime celebration. Come and see why Tall Ships America named Boston its 2009 and 2017 Port of the Year. Known as America’s Walking City, Boston is home to many historic sites that date back to the American Revolution. Visitors to Boston are encouraged to stroll the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile red brick walking trail that passes sixteen nationally significant historic sites. The Freedom Trail begins at Boston Common and ends at Bunker Hill, near the Charlestown Navy Yard and the home of the USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned ship afloat in the world. Sail Boston® will entertain its younger audience with educational programs focusing on US and international maritime history. Cadets and crewmembers will be available to educate children of all ages of their personal experiences at sea, home countries and more.

Wave hello to a fresh new sailing term! 🌊 Today’s word is “sextant” — a tool that was (and still is) used by navigators of the open seas. The sextant can help crews determine the angle between the horizon and a celestial body, such as the sun, the mood, or a star, and can help determine ones latitude and longitude. These days, they can be used if modern technology fails onboard. Has anyone out there ever used a sextant?

We’re thrilled to follow the incredible journey of the Buque Escuela a Vela BAP Unión , Peru’s majestic sail training ship, as it embarks on its 2025 Overseas Training Voyage! ⛵️

Unión departed from Callao on May 9, starting its journey to visit 10 ports across 9 countries in the Americas and Europe. The voyage will serve as a way to train future naval officers while proudly sharing Peruvian culture around the world. With 155 crew and 71 cadets aboard, this 178-day voyage will bring Unión to ports in England, Germany, Ireland, Spain, Panama and more, before returning to Callao in the fall.

We can't wait to follow along on the journey and we are excited to see the crew eventually make their way to Sail Boston in 2026! 🌎⚓️

We love following along with Bluenose II as the captain and crew continue their prep for the 2025 sailing season!

The Bluenose II crew is spending some time at its home port in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, putting work to keep the schooner looking spiffy. The deckhands are sanding and scraping the ship's bulwarks to prep for a fresh coat of paint while other parts of the ship have been sent away for servicing.

All of this work puts the ship another step closer to a smooth sailing season! Follow Bluenose II for more updates on the preparation needed for Tall Ships to operate 🌊

We're always interested to hear about what Denis Sullivan and its crew are up to! After a quick overnight sail from Charleston, the ship is now docked at the Thunderbolt Marine shipyard just outside Savannah, Georgia — the perfect spot for a bit of springtime maintenance. ☀️ 🌊

Keeping a traditional wooden sailing vessel in top shape takes time, care, and the right conditions. The crew is using this window of time to focus on essential upkeep, ensuring the Sullivan is safe, strong, and ready for the voyages ahead. It’s all part of the long-term work needed to preserve these beautiful ships for future generations.

Learn more from World Ocean School about the ongoing work to keep this beautiful wooden schooner shipshape as we sail toward Sail Boston 2026!⛵️

It's "knot" Friday yet, and since we’re all just trying to stay afloat until the weekend, we thought we'd share a new sailing not to keep your spirits buoyed ⚓

Today's knot is the "Buntline Hitch." This knot is used to tie buntlines (or ropes) to the bottom edge of square sails so they can be used to hoist or furl the sail properly.

Did you know that Tall Ships can be more than 200 ft. tall? Of the thousands of buildings that comprise downtown Boston and the surrounding area, only 122 are more than 200 feet tall. It's safe to say that Sail Boston will alter the city skyline from a more than a few vantage points next July.

It's another "knot" Friday, and we're back with another sailing knot for you to learn about ⚓

Today we have the "Double Overhand Stopper" knot, which is used to create a reliable, moderately large, stopper knot. It can also be used to increase the security of another knot.
