Boston has a wealth of maritime history—both past and present. Bostonians welcome crews and cadets from all over the world to their harbor on a continual basis as part of the Visiting Ship Program and are gearing up to greet the return of the Tall Ship fleet for Sail Boston 2026! From July 11 - 16, 2026, this spectacular event offers crews, cadets and visitors from all over the world an unforgetta

ble experience and a world-class maritime celebration. Come and see why Tall Ships America named Boston its 2009 and 2017 Port of the Year. Known as America’s Walking City, Boston is home to many historic sites that date back to the American Revolution. Visitors to Boston are encouraged to stroll the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile red brick walking trail that passes sixteen nationally significant historic sites. The Freedom Trail begins at Boston Common and ends at Bunker Hill, near the Charlestown Navy Yard and the home of the USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned ship afloat in the world. Sail Boston® will entertain its younger audience with educational programs focusing on US and international maritime history. Cadets and crewmembers will be available to educate children of all ages of their personal experiences at sea, home countries and more.

Happy Friday! To start your day right, here is another another "Know Ship" fact!

Many of the world's most famous tall ships were designed to be fast, especially those used in trading or military expeditions. Though faster vessels have been built over the past few centuries, there's still nothing like seeing a tall ship sail into a harbor at full speed. ⚓

We hate to break the news, but it's "knot" Friday yet... to keep you occupied in the meantime we have another sailing knot to learn about ⚓

Today's knot is the Ashley Stopper knot. This particular knot can be used to prevent rope from falling through a narrow passage and its trefoil structure makes it bulkier and more secure than other common stopper knots. 🪢

We're excited to follow the journey of Tall Ship Sagres today as it celebrates Portugal Day in the city of Lagos, Portugal. The Portuguese ship was docked in front of Praça da Liberdade, in Viana do Castelo throughout late May, but arrived in Lagos in time for today's festivities. In celebration, six ships of the Portuguese Republic participated in a Naval Parade today. The parade included 332 military personnel and 36 cadets from the Naval School on board.

We love to see ships come together in celebration ⛵

It's National Fishing and Boating Week - the perfect time to brush up on your nautical knowledge with another "Know Ship" fact.

What we now call tall ships were once referred to as "ships of the line" during the 17th and 18th centuries. These large vessels earned their name as they formed a battle line during the Age of the Sail.

A little-known fact for your Friday!

We have a new word of the day for you! Today's word is "Jib" - a small, triangular sail ahead of a boat's mast. It is important for the steering, balance, and propulsion of the vessel. The Jib works together with the main sail in order to help boats smoothly change direction.

Curious about what the tall ships are up to this week? We’ve got you covered with our brand-new Ship Digest where you can catch up on your favorite boat’s recent adventures all in one place. Here’s a look at where people are sailing:

⚓ Amerigo Vespucci recently completed a nearly two year around-the-world voyage where she visited more than 30 countries. This voyage marked the second circumnavigation for the Italian ship which is now undergoing a tour of ports in her home country.

⚓ World Ocean School is currently aboard United States Denis Sullivan on a voyage around Boston. Crew geared up for an adventure when they boarded the ship on Monday in Newport, Rhode Island.

⚓ Poland’s Dar Mlodziezy is sailing through the Baltic Sea on its way to port in Stockholm, Sweden.

⚓ At the end of last week, Amsterdam’s Europa set sail from Namibia to Brazil. After a stop in Azores, Europa will return to its homeland at the end of the summer for Sail Amsterdam 2025.

We love to keep up with My second love and her crew members on their adventures. After recently exploring Cape Town and paying a visit to St. Helena, the dutch tall ship Oosterschelde is continuing her epic two year global journey.

Boasting an impressive 118 feet in mast height and 164 feet in length, Oosterschelde has made two around the world voyages, visiting more than 50 countries across five continents.

We are observing the journey and are excited to welcome the ship and crew to Sail Boston 2026 to learn about their adventures⚓️

We know you might already be looking forward to the end of the week, but we have to let you know it's Knot Friday! To loosen the grip of such overwhelming disappointment, here is another knot for you to learn.

The "Figure 8" knot provides a quick and convenient stopper knot that is used in sailing, climbing, etc. It can be undone easily and provides the foundation for more complicated knots such as the "Figure 8 Double Loop."
