The history of Mt Baker ๐Ÿงญ

Before the arrival of Europeans, Mt Baker was known as Koma Kulshan which means โ€œGreat White Watcherโ€. The modern nomenclature of Mt Baker did not come until 1792 when Joseph Baker, a third-lieutenant on the British ship Discovery, saw the mountain while traveling in the Juan de Fuca Strait. It wouldnโ€™t be until almost a century later that the first ascent of Mt Baker was achieved.

Edmund Thomas Colman made the first attempt of Mt Baker in 1866 but was forced to turn back when Native Americans refused him passage. His second attempt approached via the now known Coleman Deming route but was unsuccessful after encountering an overhanging cornice of ice and poor weather conditions. Determined to summit, Coleman returned in 1868 and summited Mt Baker on August 17th with a crew of 5 other climbers!

An ascent of Mt Baker during these times would have been at least a two-week expedition, and the approach most likely would have involved transportation via steamer, railway, horseback, canoe, and lots of bushwhacking on foot. Itโ€™s amazing to see how far the sport of mountaineering has come!
