NEW DOMESTIC CAMPAIGN: Today is the official launch of Oxfam America's Poultry Worker Campaign!

The US poultry industry is thriving, but the workers who process our chicken are trapped at the bottom: they experience constant dangers to their health and safety, unfair compensation, and a climate of fear that prevents them from speaking out. We believe this is wrong and today we begin to Right The Wrong.

This year's International Youth Day (IYD) theme is "youth civic engagement - highlighting the importance and necessity of youth engaging politically, economically, and socially to achieve sustainable human development". In recognition of this, 2015 Oxfam America CHANGE Leader Jeremy from St. John's Univ. (NY) writes on Oxfam's First Person Blog. But it should also raise a lot of questions. Investors require a comprehensive picture of investment opportunities to make an informed decision. Tahoe’s current and future investors should strongly consider the political and social risks of the company’s operations in Guatemala.

"The Great Recession should have put the victim-blaming theory of poverty to rest. In the space of only a few months, millions of people entered the ranks of the officially poor—not only laid-off blue-collar workers, but also downsized tech workers, managers, lawyers, and other once-comfortable professionals. No one could accuse these “nouveau poor” Americans of having made bad choices or bad lifestyle decisions. They were educated, hardworking, and ambitious, and now they were also poor—applying for food stamps, showing up in shelters, lining up for entry-level jobs in retail. This would have been the moment for the pundits to finally admit the truth: Poverty is not a character failing or a lack of motivation. Poverty is a shortage of money."

Minimum-wage jobs are physically demanding, have unpredictable schedules, and pay so meagerly that workers can't save up enough to move on.

The power of people - personal investment. 'From the fields to the bakery' - read about Ngouda and Penda in Senegal.

We just love this story from Senegal:

Ngouda Keita and Penda Ndiaye (the couple in this photo) saved up and invested their money to achieve a lifelong dream of starting a bakery. And it's been a big success! Now, they have enough money to improve their farming business, buy school supplies & more food to eat, and cover their family's medical expenses.
