Activation #2 was a success! On Saturday, April 5th, we gathered at the Berkshire Innovation Center at Mass MoCA in North Adams MA to dive deeper into the Route 2 Overpass Study and hear directly from the community.

Despite the wet and chilly weather, nearly 70 dedicated attendees showed up to share thoughtful feedback and ideas. After a brief presentation of our findings, we broke into small groups for deeper conversations on the project’s history, open space, transportation, and early design concepts.
We’re incredibly grateful for everyone who came out and contributed—your voices are shaping the future, and we’re excited to keep building with you!

Recently, we kicked off the Reconnecting Chinatown project in Boston with a pair of community events and celebrations at the Josiah Quincy Upper School adjacent to the project site. From the powerful lion dance by Woo Ching White Crane Lion to mesmerizing performances by the New England Kungfu Dance Association (紐英崙養生舞) including a Drum Assembly (鼓) and Tai Chi Double Fan Dance (太極雙扇) and a soulful guitar set by Tao Zhang (Sasaki), the energy was unforgettable!

The project aims to re-stitch the Chinatown community across 4 large parcels that span the Massachusetts Turnpike. So we also invited the community to map their routes across Chinatown & the South End, sparking conversations about how crossing the Mass Pike shapes daily movement. Community voices are helping us re-stitch the neighborhood—one connection at a time.

Reimagining the Leftovers: Transforming Triangle Park

Thrilled to share a piece by Catherine Schmitt, who writes from the edge of the Northern Forest in Bangor, Maine. Catherine’s recent article in Northern Woodlands highlights the inspiring transformation of Triangle Park in Cambridge, MA, and explores how the city is turning forgotten industrial spaces into vibrant urban forests.

Triangle Park offers a refreshing green space amidst the urban bustle of East Cambridge. A robust Douglas fir, birch, oak, and Kentucky coffee trees create a calming oasis surrounded by city streets and high-rises.

Opened in 2023, this ¾-acre park is part of the city’s bold plan to expand tree canopy and fight climate change. Cambridge is planting thousands of trees across its neighborhoods, aiming for a 25% tree canopy and a 50% reduction in urban heat spots. The park itself features 400 trees, ranging from native New England species to more climate-resilient varieties like tulip trees and dawn redwoods.

Designed by Stoss, Triangle Park is part of a growing movement for urban microforests, inspired by the Miyawaki method, which plants dense, self-sustaining groves in small spaces. With permeable paving, ferns, and resilient hardwoods, Triangle Park is a step toward a cooler, greener future—reimagining old industrial land into a vibrant community space. Is it a forest yet? Not quite. But it’s growing into one, and for the locals who waited years for it, this park is nothing short of a miracle.

ALBANIA!! Congratulations team! We are thrilled to announce that our proposal with Steven Holl Architects and artist Agnieszka Kurant was selected as a winning scheme for EXPO Albania international competition center in Tirana, Albania.

The design for the Albanian Expo Center blends bold vision with mindfulness, drawing inspiration from the surrounding mountainous and agricultural landscape. Its undulating geometries unify the architecture and site, creating rippling hills, lawns, footpaths, and water features. These elements form novel spaces, connect the Expo to the adjacent community, buffer the site from the main road, and support sustainable water-collection strategies. The design reflects the area’s natural peaks, creating a rolling landscape that adds both social and ecological value.

The proposed landscape embraces sustainability by creating topographical low points for blue-green infrastructure, such as rain gardens and bioswales, to collect stormwater. Excavated earth will be reused to shape the landforms, establishing a closed-loop system for the project’s topography.

Pedestrian paths will connect the Center’s building to various outdoor spaces supporting year-round activities, including a multipurpose amphitheater for large gatherings and a lawn for events like wine tastings and harvesting demonstrations. The landscape will also feature public art installations. When not in use by the Expo, larger areas can serve as sports fields, while smaller pocket spaces can become parks for community recreation, including areas designed for children.

The landscape design for the Albanian Expo will offer a variety of amenities and activities through interconnected outdoor spaces, from physical recreation to passive entertainment, for all ages. Serving both the Expo and the community, the site will be active year-round. Its dynamic topography reflects the surrounding environment, creating a socially significant and sustainable landscape.

08/30/2024

Climate resilience is the cornerstone of our winning scheme for Arnos Vale Modern City, directly addressing the challenges of extreme heat, flooding, sea level rise, and biodiversity loss. Our waterfront design shows this commitment, with a layered boardwalk system that doubles as coastal defense. The lower boardwalk is engineered to flood during significant storm surges, providing wave attenuation and safeguarding the higher elevation upper boardwalk, which anticipates future sea level rise.

To combat the urban heat island effect, we’ve integrated a network of shaded public spaces, lush gardens, and water features throughout the city. These green spaces are not just aesthetic but functional, capturing stormwater and providing cooling effects. The Warrawarrow River has been revitalized with strategic drainage interventions and natural vegetation to manage flooding and enhance water quality. The preservation and expansion of mangroves along the coastline are key elements of our plan, enhancing biodiversity and providing natural storm buffers.

Green infrastructure is woven into the city’s fabric, with climate-sensitive design features that promote airflow, reduce heat, and create comfortable outdoor environments. Our reimagined E.T. Joshua Park serves as a linear green space that connects the city’s districts, offering shaded walkways, native plantings, and flexible gathering spaces that adapt year-round. By embedding climate resilience into every aspect of the design—from transportation and housing to public spaces and natural habitats—our plan ensures that Arnos Vale Modern City is not just equipped to face climate challenges but is poised to thrive in the face of them.

EXCITING NEWS! We’re thrilled to announce that our proposal won FIRST PRIZE in the international competition to reimagine Saint Vincent and the Grenadines’ abandoned airport in Arnos Vale.

Our project envisions a thriving, sustainable urban environment that prioritizes community, open spaces, and climate resilience. Central to this vision is the transformation of the former airstrip into a multifunctional central park, creating a vibrant destination for residents, workers, and visitors. The design integrates layered landscape networks that frame diverse building types, including critical new housing, retail, cultural amenities, and tourism facilities.

Moving beyond traditional linear development, the project features a double-sided canal boulevard and new development clusters in underutilized areas. This culminates in a stunning new waterfront, which serves as both a public destination and a storm surge barrier to protect the city from rising sea levels and extreme weather. The scheme includes a comprehensive multi-modal transportation network, ensuring seamless connectivity across the city.

Public spaces are designed for social interaction and climate comfort, with shaded areas replacing open plazas. Cultural and institutional destinations with modern, tropical architecture create dynamic districts. The expanded development framework includes hillside villas, a cultural and art center, higher education facilities, and high-density housing, alongside enhanced retail, government, and transportation hubs. Our project strikes a balance between economic growth, environmental stewardship, and community well-being.
