⭐ Michelangelo's "Last Judgement" adorns the altar wall in the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. This breathing taking and quite frankly "larger than life," Michelangelo's monumental fresco was commissioned by Pope Clement VII and later completed under the patronage of Pope Paul III between 1536 and 1541.

⭐ The fresco depicts the second coming of Christ and the final judgment of souls, illustrating the division of the saved and the damned.

⭐ Christ is at the center, and there are over 300 figures, each filled with intricate details and expressive postures. Some notable figures include the Virgin Mary beside Christ, saints such as Peter and Bartholomew, and the infamous figure of the flayed skin of St. Bartholomew, which is often interpreted as a self-portrait of Michelangelo.

Pompeii and Herculaneum are two of Europe’s most extraordinary archaeological sites, offering unparalleled insights into ancient Roman life and civilization. Which is why we crafted a tour to visit both in one day!

While Pompeii was mainly preserved thanks to a thick layer of volcanic ash and pumice, Herculaneum was buried under a mixture of ash and mud, which solidified over time to create the perfect protection for the fascinating world left frozen in time beneath it. Less than half the size of Pompeii, Herculaneum was a small coastal city characterized by remarkably preserved wooden structures and vibrant frescoes. With an expert guide by your side, walk in the footsteps of the noble Romans who once called this lost city home.

Visiting the two remarkable ancient cities of Pompei and Herculaneum with a local guide, and gain a vast understanding of the complex world that once thrived along the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius!

Have you had the opportunity of seeing Michelangelo's David? Created between 1501 and 1504, the twelve-feet-tall sculpture portrays the biblical hero David before his battle with the Philistine giant, Goliath. Below we share some fun facts about
this global masterpiece:

🔴 Michelangelo’s David was sculpted from one
massive block of marble.

🔴 David was meant to be on the roof of a Florentine
church.

🔴 The statue was meant to be painted, but Michelangelo decided against it, instead allowing the inherent beauty of the marble to speak for itself.

Thank you to Valentina P. for her review after visiting the Vatican Museums with Italiatours!

🔴 Marianna was an amazing and friendly guide!! She was so great with all of the people on our group, and when she had to pivot to accommodate how busy it was at the Vatican she did it seamlessly! If it wasn’t for her we would have been walking around for hours without really knowing what to focus on. The tour is long but with so much to see and learn it was needed. She did a fabulous job keeping us engaged at all times!! The dome climb was such a great addition being able to see the Vatican from the top along with where our Pope lives!! Thank you for making it a great experience despite the heat!!!

Did you know on February 11th, 1929, the Vatican City-State got its independence and was recognized as a nation?

Over ninety years ago, the nation of Italy and the Vatican agreed upon terms that constituted what came to be known as the Lateran Treaty. This event changed history: it gave full political and diplomatic power to the Church, and it made the Pope an independent and sovereign ruler of a nation🇻🇦

Today, Vatican City is home to nearly 800 citizens, and inside the walls you can find a rail system, international supermarket, postal service, and much more!

Bentornato Ottobre! Welcome back, October!

One of our favorite months to explore the Eternal City, October days are welcomed with clear blue skies, crisp evening temperatures and lesser crowds. In fact, the Romans even coined a term typically used to descrive those Roman sunny, hot, and dry days known as 'Ottobrata Romana.'

Do you know a little about Naples's patron saint?

San Gennaro, also known as Saint Januarius, was a 3rd-century bishop from Benevento and is venerated as a martyr of the Christian Church, having died during the persecution of Christians under the Roman Emperor Diocletian.

Each year, on September 19, he is celebrated in Naples. The most famous tradition associated with San Gennaro is the miraculous liquefaction of his blood, which is kept in a vial in the Naples Cathedral (Cattedrale di San Gennaro).

Around the city, you will find statues, posters, and various memorabilia dedicated to the city's most revered saints.
