Ah, the Befana!

The "La Befana" holiday is celebrated in Italy on January 6th, which is the Feast of the Epiphany. It's a day when the Befana, a kind-hearted old witch, is said to visit children all over Italy. According to folklore, she flies on her broomstick, enters homes through the chimney, and leaves gifts and sweets for well-behaved children while leaving coal or dark candy for those who have misbehaved.

The day marks the end of the Christmas season in Italy, and it's a time for families to come together, share a special meal, and exchange gifts. Do you participate in this public holiday?

☕ A trip to Naples isn't a trip if you don't sip on some Neapolitan espresso ☕

Located in the heart of the city, Bar Gambrinus is one of the most famous bars in Naples known for its elegant atmosphere and rich history. Open since 1860, the café has become one of the most iconic establishments in the city, serving as a meeting place for intellectuals, artists, politicians, and famous personalities over the years.

The café's elegant décor—featuring marble counters, chandeliers, and frescoed ceilings—also made it a favorite of artists who came to capture the beauty of the space. Bar Gambrinus became not only a café but a symbol of Naples’ cultural identity and sophistication.

The opening of the Holy Door by Pope Francis on Christmas Eve marked the beginning of a significant moment for the Church, what Pope Francis called the "Jubilee of Hope."

This "Jubilee of Hope" likely serves as an invitation to all to renew their faith, to reflect on the message of hope that is central to the Christmas season, and to be reminded of the mercy and love that the Church seeks to extend to all this Holy Year of 2025.

The Trevi Fountain is one monument that continuously takes our breath away in a city full of ancient ruins ⛲️

Did you know the fountain is made from the same material as the Colosseum? The fountain is mostly built from travertine stone, a name that means “from the Tiber” in Latin. A mineral made of calcium carbonate formed from spring waters, especially hot springs, the likely source was the city of Tivoli, about 22 miles from Rome.

“We thoroughly enjoyed the entire day. Our guide Benedict and driver Simone were excellent from the moment we arrived in Naples. Benedict guided us through a whole three hour walking tour through Pompeii and gave us a fascinating insight in to what life was like before the eruption right through to the current excavations taking place. The wine tasting and lunch afterwards was superb as well. Highly recommend for anyone visiting Rome and looking for a day trip to see more of Italy.”

Herculaneum, another archaeological site on the outskirts of Naples, has a rich history that results from the tragic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Herculaneum was a much smaller, yet wealthier town than its neighbor Pompeii, and its residents included affluent Romans who built luxurious villas with intricate mosaics, frescoes, and private baths.

When the volcanic eruption occurred, Herculaneum was covered by a pyroclastic surge (superheated volcanic mud), and preserved organic materials such as wood, food, and even human remains exceptionally compared to Pompeii, which was buried mostly by volcanic ash.
